The bluestone building with pink awnings at 135 Greeves Street had no doubt caught many a passers-by’s eye, but never to the extent it did one man around the turn of the Millennium. Deciding it was the perfect place to make his dream of owning a bar come true – and accompanied by a Dutch friend who fancied running a venue with 100 beers in the fridge – the lease was snapped up and Lambs Go Bar was born.

The 100 beers in the fridge soon materialised, a traditional English pub-style hand pump was later added to the bar, the nooks and crannies were filled with comfy chairs, classic arcade games and a pool table, and one of Fitzroy’s best little secrets was born. What’s more, Melbourne had a beer bar worthy of the name.

The original owners moved on but continuity was assured with the lease passing to one of their regulars, Jason King, and his brother Adam. It means the fridge still contains more than 100 beers, local brewers get the chance to show off their wares on rotating taps, the extensive burger menu remains intact, staff know what they’re on about and the 101 Club is still open to those wanting to drink their way around the world.

As for the venue itself, imagine an old English pub divided into all manner of side rooms and snugs then give it an off kilter spin and you’re halfway there. Cosy and kitsch in equal measures and lined with beer memorabilia, it’s more than enough to forgive the dreadful pun in its name.
