The Little Creatures story may well have started in Fremantle back in 2000, but their beers quickly found favour in Victoria – so much so that the brewery needed its own base in the state. As many of the first bars to take on their beers were centred around Fitzroy, it made sense that when the West Australians were ready to open a home away from home, they would look there. And as soon as they stumbled across the empty warehouse that now houses their dining hall in Brunswick Street, it was never going to be anywhere else.
Formerly the Fitzroy stables, complete with laneway running through its middle, and later a wool store, it had lain empty for a number of years before Little Creatures began their makeover. Opened in July 2008, it rapidly became a much talked-about destination on the Melbourne bar scene, offering up a mix of the brewery’s own beers alongside those from White Rabbit, other Australian brewers and a handful from overseas.
Always changing – the late 2010 incarnation mixes booths, benches, bookshelves and bikes in a colourful mix – it has a kitchen serving up food all day and night, including pizzas, sharing plates and sweets, and occasionally taps kegs of limited run Little Creatures beers that may never see the light of day elsewhere. And while it’s a very different setup to that at the brewery’s original harbourside home in Freo, the Creatures' know how when it comes to enhancing the simple pleasure of drinking beer has survived the interstate trip fully intact.
