The Good Beer Week Hop Garden

Good Beer Week continues its mission to bring good beer to the masses with its latest venture, the Hop Garden.

In partnership with the City of Melbourne, the team behind the annual beer week is turning the main beer garden at Beer DeLuxe in Federation Square green for 11 days to teach visitors a little about how beer is made and the importance of hops in brewing.

The beer garden on the Flinders Street side of the venue will be decorated with hops from February 27 to March 9 and Good Beer Week will host free masterclasses about beer, brewing and hops – some featuring guest brewers – on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Drinkers will be able to educate themselves and their palates any time they drop in throughout the Hop Garden's 11 days as a selection of beers that highlight hop characters from different regions of the world will be on tap. They will be served – individually or alongside each other on tasting paddles – with tasting cards that explain what hops are, which varieties are in each of the beers, what characteristics to look out for and what food will go well with each beer.

The Hop Garden beers are:

  • Holgate Brewhouse Pilsner (Europe)
  • Boatrocker Smash (Australia)
  • Mountain Goat Summer Ale (New Zealand)
  • Feral Hop Hog (USA)

The aim is to improve knowledge about beer, in particular its ties to agriculture, in a fun and approachable manner as well as raising the profile of good beer in advance of the launch of the Official 2015 Good Beer Week program on March 13.

Beer DeLuxe will be the GBW Festival Hub when the festival returns for its fifth anniversary from May 16 to 24.

The Hop Garden officially opens at 6pm on February 27.
