Feral Barrel Project at Keg & Brew

One of the many highlights of GABS 2016 was the Feral Barrel Experiment at which the WA brewer made one beer then split it between several different barrels, each of which had previously been used to house a different beverage, from wine to whiskey to bourbon to sherry.

The idea was that drinkers get several samples and see, taste and smell firsthand the difference a barrel makes to a beer during the ageing process.

if you missed the whole experiment at GABS, fear not as the Keg & Brew has snaffled six different kegs and will be throwing them all on the bar for your enjoyment. As well as the base Belgian golden ale you’ll be able to try it aged in:

  • French oak barrels
  • Adelaide Hills Chardonnay barrels
  • Cabernet Sauvignon barrels
  • Tasmanian whiskey barrels
  • Jack Daniels bourbon barrels

This is the first time all these beers have been tapped outside of GABS, so get along and do some experimenting – there’ll be tasting paddles on offer to help you get through the range.

Feral’s man-on-the-ground in Sydney will be heading along and shouting a few Smoked Porters between 4pm and 5:30pm, so it's a good excuse to duck off work early.
