Time for a new addition to the site. Nick O, aka Crafty Pint NSW, aka Mr Crafty Events Diary, has decided to cast his eyes over the week ahead and pick out a few highlights from the craft beer world.
After all, there’s always heaps happening in the Australian beer world these days – and it’s only going to get busier now that craft beer has gone past the point of no return – so we figure anything we can do to help navigate these myriad goings on has to be a boon. So, below (and each subsequent Monday) you’ll find some highlights to check out across the country this week…
Some of the world’s finest beer palates are in Melbourne this week judging for the 2014 Australian International Beer Awards. On top of tasting their way through the 1000+ entries for the competition, they’re taking time to mingle with beer lovers at the inaugural Hop Off Dinner at The Terminus.
This event sees brewers taking on the Good Beer Week team, with each side pairing a beer from last year’s AIBA medallists to each dish of a three course dinner. You get to be the judge and decide who has the better match. With three courses, seven beers and dozens of top local and international brewers this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity.
Doctor’s Orders Brewing is set to release their latest mid-seasonal beer and it’s a typically weird and wonderful creation: a 100 percent Wheat Wasabi Porter titled ‘Vaccine’. Be amongst those to get the first taste at the official launch tonight at Frankie’s Pizza By The Slice.
Fresh is best
With the annual hop harvest having taken place recently, breweries across the country have been busy brewing Fresh Hop (and in some cases Wet Hop) beers – beers in which the hops are added to the brew fresh from being picked. As well as being a chance for brewers to experiment with one-off brews, it’s an opportunity for hop growers to try out new and experimental varieties. For a taste of what’s been released so far (and where to find them) head here.
Cammeray Craft, the new beer-friendly restaurant in Sydney’s northern suburb of the same name, is putting on its first dedicated beer event. It’ll be five courses matched with five beers (plus a few extra ‘refreshers’, since it’s a special occasion), with brewers from Riverside and Doctor’s Orders along for the evening.
It’s been quite the journey for Temple Brewing in the past couple of years; having opened in 2011 and forged a great reputation for their beers, the brewery was closed temporarily in 2013 before re-opening a few months later under a new ownership structure.
For this month’s Ale Stars – the regular beer event held at St Kilda’s Local Taphouse – Temple’s new head brewer Glenn Harrison will be sharing their story and some beers, one of which is Rye Hard; a collaboration between Temple and members of the Ale Stars fraternity.
As always, there are plenty more events lined up across the country in the coming weeks, all of which can be viewed on the Events Diary.
