Head Up The Brewing Team At Bad Shepherd

Posted November 1, 2017

This posting is more than 1 year old

Bad Shepherd is part of the brewing community in Melbourne's southeast, combining a popular brewpub operation with a core range and regular seasonals sold around Victoria. The team there is looking to take on a new head brewer before the year is out.

JOB DESCRIPTION: HEAD BREWER – MELBOURNE

We are Bad Shepherd Brewing Co, a microbrewery and BBQ smokehouse located in the Bayside suburb of Cheltenham, Victoria. We’re passionate about the simple things in life, like good craft beer and comfort food, with a strong focus on quality and customer service. Whether at our brewery or through our bottles in people’s homes, we’re here to make beer that is tasty, interesting and fulfilling. That’s the way beer should be.

To that end, we are currently seeking a dynamic and dedicated Head Brewer to join our team. Our ideal candidate will have a minimum of a moderate level of experience both in brewing and operations management.

About the role:

This role is fast paced and physically demanding but if brewing and craft beer is your passion, you will find this an extremely rewarding opportunity.

You will manage day to day brewery operations including brewery scheduling, recipe development, quality control/labwork, supplier relationships and stock management. In addition you will function autonomously as a brewer leading brewing, cleaning, packaging and regular brewery maintenance. You will also be responsible supervising and developing a small team of brewers including resource scheduling.

We are focused on developing our staff to continually enhance their requisite skill sets with ongoing development opportunities. Our ideal candidate will have a keen interest in progressing towards a medium to long term goal of assuming the responsibility to lead the development and function of an expanded/larger production facility with a team of skilled brewers.

In order to meet our production demands, you will be required to be flexible in your schedule across weekdays and weekends.

About you:

In order to be successful in this role, we expect that you would possess the following attributes:

  • Minimum 3 years of commercial brewing experience working independently in brewing, cleaning, packaging and maintenance roles
  • Experience in training and developing staff in a brewery environment
  • Experience managing raw, pack and finished good materials including order processes, stock counting and movement of finished goods stock to logistics partner warehouses
  • Experienced in developing and optimizing beer recipes
  • A comprehensive knowledge of and passion for craft beer
  • Ability to multi task and work in a fast paced production environment whilst maintaining accuracy, attention to detail and best practice at all times
  • Understanding the importance and application of sanitation practices in the brewing and manufacturing process
  • Mechanical aptitude & problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Strong cultural fit with a fun loving but hard working attitude

Most importantly, we are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual, who is interested in working collaboratively with us, not just for us.

Whilst formal qualifications are not a strict requirement, a degree in Brewing, Brewing Science, Chemistry, Micro Biology or Engineering would be a distinct advantage.

What we offer:

  • The opportunity to be a part of an exciting new business in a stage of rapid growth
  • The chance to brew award winning beers and to run the operations for a passionate and engaged team
  • Join a fun loving, professional and supportive management team
  • The opportunity to develop and expand our brewery operations to meet a fast growing demand for Bad Shepherd beers

To apply, please send your resume and covering letter to info@badshepherd.com.au.

Applications close Friday, December 1, 2017.

To be considered you must have the right to live and work in Australia.
