They have a lot of history behind them at Bridge Road, but one thing the 18-year-old brewery have always shown is a desire to innovate. Sometimes it's with new hops, but often it’s through some more madcap ideas, like back when they made Australia’s first beer advent calendar (sounds to me like an idea that’ll never take off!). As 2024 comes to a close, Colossus may well be their most audacious idea yet, with the High Country brewers releasing what they say – and indeed they seem to be right – is the country’s strongest.
If you often find yourself asking one of life’s great questions, “Should I have a beer or a whisky?”, then Colossus has you covered. At 32 percent ABV, the beer is getting awfully close to whisky strength, and as your glass fills with spirituous molasses and caramel flavours that are layered with rich chocolate that's had brown sugar melted straight in, you can’t help but forget you might be drinking a beer at all.
Or maybe what you're drinking is a liqueur? The hefty cherry, plum, and raisin notes, so fulsome you're more likely to find them in a port or a thick slice of Christmas cake, suggest it is.
