Aether started their 2024 Summer Of Sour series with a beer that, quite frankly, bamboozled me; as it draws to a close, things are rather different as they end proceedings with a tidy little Cherry Sour.
Italian sour cherries bring a sprinkling of berry notes – redcurrant and blackcurrant alongside the expected cherry – and while there’s not a lot of sweetness, there’s a nice grounded cherry skin note that hints at kirsch liqueur. The sourness is reminiscent of the zing you get when you bite into a tart green apple, and the addition of vanilla rounds out the flavours with a note of creaming soda.
This sour has enough going on that you can certainly enjoy it on its own, but my recommendation is to pair it with a festive meal and let it add to the joy.
