If you're on the hunt for WA’s thickest beer, you can now stop as Boston have arrived with Mango Margarita Smoovy Sour. Now, I'll admit I'm unsure if there is actually anyone on such a hunt; thankfully, for lovers of all things fruity, there’s plenty of boxes ticked here besides "thick"…
This limited release is an experiment in pushing a beer to its limits, and the result is something decadent and delicious that won’t be for everyone. Mango is, as expected, the dominant flavour here with 800kg of purée (and some lime peel) bringing an intense, fresh presence akin to eating the sweet, fleshy fruit itself. Latching to the side of the glass, viscosity is high with a creamy mouthfeel almost in spec with a mango lassi – the touch of soft carbonation is a reminder you are still in beer territory. Fruit sweetness is prominent and surprisingly refreshing with some citrus-driven acidity cutting through the fruit sweetness while the finish is soft and not overly sticky.
For some, Mango Margarita Smoovy Sour won’t hit the spot, but for those into such obscure offerings (like this writer) there’s plenty to love, and plenty of fruit.
