Delivering liquid arrogance on the road has seen San Diego legends Stone Brewing's Arrogant Bastard arrive nonchalantly at Bootleg Brewery, Margaret River. Previous sightings of a Bastard that began its assertive life in 1997 have included the esteemed Maine Beer Company, Great Divide Brewing Co, BrewDog and Maui Brewing Co. Launched on March 4, 2016, this Australian version of the Arrogant Bastard is a one time only appearance with part of the proceeds of sales going to the Foster Care to Success charity; who says arrogant bastards can’t have a heart?
The story behind the Bastard's arrival in Margaret River has been covered on the site already, although the role of Tim Wills of Premier Stainless in getting Stone's Greg Koch and Bootleg brewer Michael Brookes together was also a crucial step along the road to its Aussie release. As for the beer itself, the Bootlegged Arrogant Bastard delivers a deep mahogany colour, thin cream head and with rising caramel aromas. The caramel aroma follows through on the palate alongside light, fruity characters. The firm alcohol presence supports a relatively restrained hop character that is more like a well intentioned shoulder bump at the bar than a head butt. All of the elements benefit immensely from being kegged the day before release and without the 15,000 kilometre transit the beer usually has to make from its Escondido, California home.
It may be hard not to compare this delicious beer with other in its ego driven lineage but, after tasting, one question remains: Are you worthy?
