The notion of a table beer is one that is yet to gain much traction in Australia, despite the nation’s proclivity to buy beer by the jug or to stick with one beverage for the entire evening. But Preston’s Tallboy & Moose are clearly not out to produce a watered down version of an ale to be drunk without thought, with their interpretation of a table beer coming with a resinous hop hit right from the start.
Dry hopped with Cascade, Columbus and Galaxy, this pale ale belies its 3.4 percent ABV strength, offering up a piney hop aroma that continues through to the palate. Glimpses of the Galaxy hop’s signature stone fruit peek through as you drink too.
For those who may not be quite as fond of the big, bold IPAs currently taking over the scene, session pales have become a way to deliver flavour and aroma without the heady ABV. And this beer, amber in colour and light in body, with a light malt base pushing the hop profile to the fore, does just that: a small beer that packs a punch.
