Before Staves opened, its founder Steve had designs on plenty of British style beers pouring through the venue’s taps, a homage of sorts to the beers and breweries of his homeland which had helped shaped him. And while they certainly dabble in beers form the Old Country – the cask ales a case in point – the everyday lineup represents much more of a colourful view of the wider beer world than it is wedded to one particular country. That said, the oatmeal stout is a permanent reminder of the brewpub’s British roots, however long they may stretch at times. It’s a fulsome beer that’s heavy on roasted barley and chocolate malt and uses a fair whack of rolled oats too. You’ll find it sitting in that zone where dryness meets sweetness and has richness all around.
