An experiment as much as a beer and one where similar projects have garnered far more column inches, Smokin' Bagpipes is a beer brewed with nothing other than Tasmanian peat smoked malt.
Once the entire batch has been malted, it's used to brew a Scotch ale, replacing what would typically be subtle smoky characters in beers of the style with seriously intense smoky characters. There's a sticky, dark fruit like sweetness underpinning the peat smoke derived elements but really it's all about the smoke, conjuring memories of Islay whiskies and herbal medicine and, for most drinkers, making it a beer to share with mates over a cigar – or, if tackling alone, one to take on slowly.
