The ordinary bitter style hasn’t really taken off in Australia. But one sip of a well made bitter has you asking: “Why the hell not?”
The Brickworks English Bitter challenges those Aussies who have never tasted malt driven beer before and pleases those British expats who now live in the Land of the Lager.
This is a beer that’s all about the malt. It begins with the dark red brick colour, promising depth of flavour before the first sip. In both the aroma and the taste the hop character is subdued, with the hops bringing just enough bitterness for balance. The yeast character is low, for fairly neutral flavours. But the malt brings rich caramel, with the tiniest hint of smokiness in the finish.
It’s a style you don’t see a lot in Australia. But Brickworks works.
