The understated attraction of Bulli Brewing’s core range of beers is Darkside, a beer that sits comfortably in no category other that perhaps “generic dark ale”. It’s not a black beer as such, more something that’s at home in the rich ruby red realm of the colour spectrum. It’s not a stout or porter; it’s nether dry nor roasty nor generally robust enough. But it does have essential elements that make dark beers of its ilk so comforting and appealing. At first you find it in a coffee malt character but that very gently slides away to reveal a slightly sweeter side, one where soft caramel mixes with a side of sweet berries. Balanced on a medium body this is not a challenging beer. The challenge is thus resisting the urge to have two.
