Old Man Yells At Cloud has been a runaway success for Old Wives Ales, with the beer’s big, tropical notes and celeber reference to The Simpsons helping the NEIPA stand out in a field of many. As such beers have taken off, plenty of sub-styles have arisen, with bigger and boozier double NEIPAs appearing with greater regularity through 2018.
The brewers at Old Wives Ales are the latest to make a beer that fits into that world and, though there are plenty out there that might still deride the haze craze, to paraphrase Abe Simpson himself, you may have once been with it, but then they changed what "it" was, and now what you’re with isn’t it. And what’s "it" seems weird and scary.
Pouring from a darker and somewhat more sinister can than the original, it’s a small change that helps suggest a larger, brooding beer is inside. Mango and passionfruit juice are the biggest characters to leap from a beer that manages to keep well hidden the fact that it’s packing a fairly hefty 9 percent ABV punch. Compared with the original, the higher booze level sees those fruit flavours almost come across as riper, even slightly sickly, while providing a prickle on the palate as though it's a juice that's just been squeezed.
