Tinkering away beneath Brisbane’s Story Bridge, Felons have served up another limited release for local beer fans, particularly fans of hops. The Double Dry Hopped American Pale Ale (DDH APA) makes use of potent Cryo hops (a concentrated form of hops), featuring varieties Mosaic, Idaho 7, Ekuanot, Amarillo and Loral hops from American hopsmiths Yakima Chief added at two stages in the fermentation process. Maintaining the American theme, yeast from White Labs was used to create a hop bomb travelling under the guise of a pale ale.
With some haze with a powerful aroma, the beer brings big tropical fruit upfront. Once you pass through that wall of hops, a mango sweetness emerges accompanied by a citrus zest that freshens and brightens the beer. The citrus stays through to the end, where there's a dry, slightly bitter finish.
At 6 percent ABV, the DDH APA is not one for your entry level pale ale drinkers but will delight those looking for a good, solid IPA. Best enjoyed fresh and accompanied by an unbeatable view of Brisbane River.
