Since securing a few extra tanks, Preston’s Tallboy & Moose have been focusing on getting more of their beers out onto the road. The latest of their monthly releases is Hey Presto, a crispy and clean summer lager that reminded us a little of a turned up version of the brewery’s cream ale, The Cream. Pouring a cloudy light gold and dry-hopped with Motueka and Mandarina Bavaria, within its lean body look out for flavours of lime, mandarin and a little stone fruit.
Make your way to the brewpub and you’ll find a couple more new releases to enjoy too. The first, Kokomo IPA, is a beer where the hops Galaxy, Ahtanum and Azacca, plus lactose and a malt bill featuring oats are all designed to sweep you away to the Tropics. Mango, stone fruit and pine come together against a slight sweetness and limited bitterness to create the feeling of a hazy IPA that’s turned clear.
Black Parade, on the other hand, is in no way clear. The lager makes use of purple wheat to create a dark pilsner without too many of the flavours you’d associate with a beer of its hue. While there are some roasted a coffee notes, they remain light, keeping the beer refreshing, with some earthy, herbal and floral hop overtones completing the picture.
