Nail Brewing NBT #5: Simcoe & Centennial

Nail Brewing

Published February 14, 2020

When we first covered the Nail NBT series it was the modern extension of John Stallwood’s formative years prior to founding the brewery, when he brewed more than 40 test batches at the University of Ballarat of what would become the now retired Nail Ale.

But that was only part of the story. NBT #5 arrives with the digital unveiling of what Nail are calling Australia’s biggest collaboration: a partnership with you, the beer drinker. A QR code on the back of the can now links to a Nail rating page where Appearance, Aroma, Flavour and Technical Merit can be judged along with space for comment and picture, if warranted. This information will be used to inform future batches of NBT and, eventually, the rest of the Nail range; all the drinker need do is check the digi-print under the can to know which edition they are holding, in this case #5 SCAN QR.

While QR codes have been around since 1994 in manufacturing, they languished in retail markets despite some initial enthusiasm. With vast improvements in modern mobile phone capability, internet speeds and UX design, QR codes are now maximising their potential – I didn’t need a secondary app to add my submission as the link appeared on the screen when the camera was open. The concept is called The Internet Of Things and, perhaps, the most interesting part of this is that out of all of the 700 or so Australian brewing companies, it’s one of the oldest leading the charge.

But, while this is all fun, there is still a beer to enjoy. After Cashmere, Topaz, Ella and El Dorado, and Comet hop editions, #5 welcomes the classic combo of Simcoe and Centennial. Expect grapefruity citrus and pine with a firm yet approachable bitterness on a juicy pale base that’s made for enjoying by the pint at the pub and by the can at home. But don’t take my word for it, pick up your phone, scan the QR code and tell Nail what you think.
