Nathan Munt from King River Brewing has been busy throwing fruit into his beers recently, with two Berliner Weisse style beers available from the brewery this April. For Blueberry Berliner Weisse, he sourced local blueberries so he could throw them atop a kettle soured wheat ale base. The skin of those berries give the beer a fantastic pink, slightly purple hue while the flavour they contribute is unmistakable, while the tart finish, to my mind, brought to mind chomping on blueberries straight from a bush.
The King Valley may be an excellent region for growing and producing many delicious foods but it's not home to mangoes, so Nathan presumably looked a little further for his Mango Berliner Weisse. The resultant beer is, however, very much a partner to the blueberry. It looks just as much like the fruit that’s been crammed into it, is equally tart and is all about showcasing one fruit above all else. Rather than raiding the berry bush, though, this is more a case of raiding the freezer, pushing your arm past the eight kilos of mince meat and seven litres of milk you've been stockpiling and pulling out a Frosty Fruit instead.
