Not one to do things by halves, King River’s Nathan Munt was planning on taking three different fresh hop beers to High Country Hops this year. And, while the festival couldn’t run this year, those three beers have still been brewed as a celebration of Australian hops and can be snapped up in a Harvest Mixed Pack the brewery is selling, which also contains the wonderful Fig Porter. Each amber-hued beer is 6 percent ABV and dubbed a Wet Hopped Ale, with strong ale probably the closest in terms of style to give you an idea, and each provides a subtle showcase of three different hops.
In the case of Ella, a mix of floral, spice and clove are the main flavours from the flowers, followed by grapefruit and gripping bitterness at the end. Vic Secret, on the other hand, doesn’t quite pack the bitterness levels of Ella and instead gives off a mix of pineapple, passionfruit and light pine needles. Then there’s Galaxy and, as should be expected, passionfruit leads the charge before a little stonefruit appears with proceedings capped off by a freshly cut grass finale.
