Kalsarikännit (try here for the pronounciation) is a Finnish word that really needs to be popularised in English. The word effectively translates to “pantsdrunk” and refers to life’s great pleasure of drinking at home in your underwear with no intention of going anywhere. Now seems like the perfect time to push for its move into common usage too, considering so many new words and phrases have risen out of lockdown. Two Birds have looked to capture the blissful feeling of underwear drinking with two different Kalsarikännit beers; a hazy pale and a vanilla and cacao stout.
Hazy Pale combines the hops Samba, Enigma, Ekuanot and Mosaic to provide a big whack of pineapple and mango. There’s a little orange juice in their too and a decent bite of bitterness towards the end to make for one refreshing beer to enjoy on the couch.
On the much darker end of the beery spectrum is Vanilla & Cacao Stout, which was brewed with vanilla beans and cacao nibs, along with the hops Columbus, Warrior and HPA-016 from Hop Products Australia. It might be a sweet stout but there’s still prominent roasted, coffee-like flavours along with the chocolate which is joined by a vanilla-aided sweet smoothness. Those hops have a fair presence too, with notes of pine and resin nudging the beer slightly towards black IPA territory.
