Fury & Son Stout 2020 & Salted Caramel Stout

Fury & Son

Published September 4, 2020

The Fury & Son brewers kept themselves busy during lockdown playing around with variations on a theme. They've been working on four barrel-aged beers and also took their stout, boosted it from the previous years' 5.5 percent ABV to 6.5 and decided to give it three twists (of which we missed the first two but have the third below).

As for the new, bigger Stout, you'll find a soft, dusty cacao meets nougat aroma, with flavours that are more of that dusty chocolate and Milo variety than anything overtly roasty or bitter, yet it still finishes reasonably dry with a little cola and bitter dark chocolate wrapping things up.

As for the Salted Caramel Stout, it's as if the brewers have spun a streak of honeycomb through proceedings. That said, the salted caramel character has been added judiciously – it's there but sits amid a pretty dark, dry chocolate structure rather than dominating. If anything, it seems to have emboldened the base stout's sharper, roastier nature with the outcome a beer that's the livelier of the two.
