Pioneer Brewing Co XPA

Pioneer Brewing

If you’ve ever wondered what the "X" in "XPA" stands for, Pioneer translate their own interpretation of the style for you: “Xtra flavour… Xtra hops.”

This beer begins with a balancing malt presence; perhaps it’s the power of suggestion, since the brewery (aptly) describes this beer as looking like honey, but there’s a lovely honey sweetness hovering over the surface of this XPA. But rather than dominating, this sets the scene for the hops, which bring berry and light citrus flavours to shape the experience, all undergirded with a rigid bitterness. There’s almost a homemade jam character overall – sticky, caramelised fruit sugars preserved with citrus rind.

If you drink this XPA at the Pioneer taproom in regional NSW, you’ll be looking for a roadside stall selling homemade jam on your way home.
