See the liquid sittin’ in the glass now
In the evening on a Friday night
A little light-a-shinin' through the glass now
Lets me know everything's all right.
Summer Wheat† makes me feel fine
Blowin' through the grain fields in my mind…
Kolsch and Summer Wheat are two seasonal releases from Pioneer Brewing that’ll let you know everything’s all right.
They’re both a pleasant gold (though the Kolsch is brighter while the Summer Wheat carries a little natural haze); they’re both traditional European styles made with malts grown entirely on Pioneer’s farm near Orange; and they’re both easy to drink and soft in the mouth while retaining their individual characters.
Delicate and subtle, the Kolsch has light pear esters complemented by a slightly honeyed flavour that rides in and picks up on its golden sparkle. There’s a surprising bite in the backend; it’s sneaky how much bitterness manages to seep in for such a clean tasting beer.
The Summer Wheat has more complexity. Pioneer’s own malts bring plenty to the table, and act as a base for the fruity esters; smooth rye sourdough notes pair with a thin spreading of lemon butter, served up alongside a fruit salad of lychee, rockmelon and banana. There’s even a gentle woodiness in the background, like the rustic bread board used to serve up this simple but tasty snack.
Expect these two easy-drinkers to make you feel fine.
† If you’re not sure how to sing this in your head, where have you been for the last 50 years? This will catch you up.
