When tins arrive from Tallboy & Moose, you truly never know where those tins will take you. The Preston brewpub team has always been quick to experiment with new ingredients and brewing methods and doesn’t mind pushing styles to their boundaries either.
Straight To The Pool Room is a little closer to an example of the latter over the former, with the strong ale taking a line from a classic Australian movie and adding Tasmanian pepperberry. At 7 percent ABV, the Australian strong ale could just as easily be an IPA, but with a much darker hue when compared with most IPAs you’d find on the shelves today, "strong" seems like a well-placed moniker. The amber beer offers plenty on the malt front too, mainly caramel, while the Chinook hops provide a punch of pine as the pepperberry throws out a dry, woody and quite sharp eucalyptus flavour.
From these shores to North America's... Each year, Tallboy like to go big for Canada Day, which is on July 1, and Nitro Moose Mousse feels like something of a prelude to those celebrations. The nitro milk stout pours with a thick, white head that slightly resembles whipped cream, and there’s plenty of chocolate to the beer that puts it in dessert territory. But, like a good dessert, there's a bit of balance too, with more roasted notes and something a little closer to tobacco, not to mention an earthy element and woody finish.
