Did I miss the news story about a cargo plane that got into trouble over regional New South Wales and had to dump its freight of confectionery just outside Tumut, and for some reason the only way to dispose of the variety of sugary treats was for the local brewery to make beer out of it all? Or is the crew at Tumut River Brewing Co just clever enough to know punters like their limited releases to invoke novelty and nostalgia?
Whatever the genesis of Sugar Baby (as well as a bunch of past TRBC releases), it’s another one for those among us with a sweet tooth. Not that this fairy floss sour is exactly like the carnival treat that inspired it – it pours with an apricot blush rather than pink and blue, it’s not so sweet as to give you cavities, and it does have an undercurrent of sour woven in with the strands of sweetness – but it certainly carries the flavour well enough to bring memories of school fêtes and ferris wheel rides to the fore.
If you ask nicely, your parents might buy some for you.
