The likes of Larry, Sally, Donnie and Eddie might be well-known to Your Mates fans but not every beer brewed by the Sunshine Coast brewery gets a name of its own. Instead, the brewery’s limited release beers are sent out to the world with nothing but a style to introduce themselves to would-be drinkers, while holding onto the possibility that one day, they too might be given a set of eyes and a smiling face.
When it comes to Aussie Lager, you can't help but feel it would be suited to a classic Australian name of the 1980s, such as Darryl or Bruce, with the beer inspired by the lagers enjoyed by the Your Mates before they started drinking craft beer. It means you’ll find it to be quite sessionable, crisp and to have a somewhat biscuity malt base while providing only the softest touches of hop aroma in the shape of a floral bouquet.
From classic lagers to a modern mashup of IPA and lagers, Cold IPA sees Your Mates look to one of the style success stories of recent times. Fittingly it looks as clear in the glass as their Aussie Lager does and has a similarly clean finish too but those easy-drinking elements are joined by quite an intense hoppy medley of tangerine, sherbet orange and pine.
Mixed Berry Sour meanwhile, could be another drink entirely, with the auburn sour appearing like store-bought juice while the beer itself was brewed by the women of Your Mates for International Women’s Day and features boysenberry, raspberry and blueberry. Both the blueberry and boysenberry add sweet and quite juicy notes while raspberry sinks in for a tart and quite gripping finish.
Also fresh from Your Mates at the time of writing is a gluten-free Passionfruit Sour, which you can read about here.
