Allegedly spring is going on in Melbourne right now and while there might not be much warm weather, breweries still have sunnier days on their minds. Among them are Two Birds and their limited-release gose, Bramble Bang, which features blackberry juice, lime zest and mint.
That combination immediately brings to mind mojitos and while those Cuban cocktails might traditionally be more about the rum, mint and lime, adding blackberry wouldn’t exactly make you Dr Frankenstein. But there’s no warming rush of white rum booze here, even if, at 7.2 percent ABV and sold in 500ml cans, it's in no way a small beer. Instead, Bramble Bang is all about really fresh blackberry flavours and even the aroma is so intense it's like picking the berries straight off the bush and realising hours later that they've left quite a mark behind on your hands. The tartness meanwhile, acts as a counterweight to that fruit and the mint and makes it the kind of sour that's perfect for a warm spring afternoon. If you can find one...
