New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Wheaty Brewing Corps & The Bruery Quandong Saison

Tapped Today
It is no secret the Wheaty Brewing Corps team love a collaboration, especially around the time of Good Beer Wheaty. As part of the 2019 mini-fest, the crew from The Bruery in the US jumped into the Thebarton brewery and straight into the hazmat suits, as house culture "The Menace" was once again wheeled out to make something wild and full of unidentifiable bugs. The malt bill was kept simple, with some heavy late Amarillo and Citra hop additions to bring a little something extra. But they… Read more

Wheaty Brewing Corps & Small World Bakery Kvass

Tapped Today
The Wheaty Brewing Corps don't just collaborate with other brewers; here, they turned to a business that specialises in a very different type of fermentation: sourdough bread. Along with the Wheaty’s mixed culture yeast, 60kg of Small World Bakery’s rye sourdough was sliced, toasted and thrown into the top of the mash to create a Kvass. It's a style best known in Russia, where old stale bread was wild fermented with sugar to create a sour, very low ABV ale. The Wheaty’s clocks in at 4.8 percent… Read more

Moon Dog Black Lung IX

Tapped Yesterday
Moon Dog’s Black Lung has been busting out of barrels since 2011, with the smoky stout spending its time ageing with a different kind of vessel each year. You can read more about the beer’s story here with past barrels including bourbon, whisky, Cognac, and red wine; this time around, tequila got the guernsey. The barrels were sourced from Tequila Tromba, which is about as Australian as a tequila company can get, having been founded by two Australians and a Canadian. Both the Reposado and Añejo… Read more

Moon Dog In The Crumble The Mighty Crumble & Olida Bit Of Haze, Eh?

Tapped Yesterday
The inventive name well at Moon Dog shows no sign of slowing down as the brewery releases two very different (but aptly named) cans. There’s In The Crumble, The Mighty Crumble – an apple crumble sour with lactose, vanilla and cinnamon. Making its way into the world at the same time as the Lion King remake looks rather well planned and it's hard to question how well the beer captures the dessert in a can. The tart apple catches you first, then leads into the sweeter flavours, the vanilla and the… Read more

Hargreaves Hill Brew 1000

Tapped Yesterday
The recent vintages of Hargreaves Hill’s R.I.S. (Russian Imperial Stout) have been a favourite in these quarters, serving up a raft of sumptuous complex flavours in a beer that’s spent no time in oak. So, when we were told the brewery had decided to produce a barrel-aged version of that beer, you can imagine our excitement. Apparently we’re not the only fans of the beer either, with others having called for barrel-aged versions in years gone by. So, when the Yarra Valley brewery realised they… Read more

Stomping Ground & Blackhearts & Sparrows Bramble On

Tapped Yesterday
With eleven stores and another set to open before the end of the year, Blackhearts & Sparrows are getting craft beer (not to mention fine wine and spirits) into a lot of hands. As the business has grown, they’ve also looked to collaborate with more of the producers they stock, offering their staff a chance to understand what goes into the bottles and cans on their shelves. The latest of those collaborations is with Stomping Ground, giving the bottleshop’s Gore Street head office the chance… Read more

Edge Brewing Project Hannibal & Pimped Up Pomme

Tapped July 18th, 2019
Edge are no strangers to brewing sours or lagers (in fact, aside from the odd imperial stout, you could call it their raison d’etre) and they’ve used both styles as colourful canvases upon which to explore flavour. For winter 2019, they've let both an imperial lager and an imperial sour out into the world, both with the same ABV of 7.2. The aptly named Hannibal is the third in a trilogy of ever boozier red lagers, following Cereal Killer and Psycho Killer. There’s a mix of rich, biscuit and… Read more

Young Henrys & Collective Arts Rye IPA

Tapped July 16th, 2019
For this year’s Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival, Canadian brewery Collective Arts brewed collaboration beers with six breweries, and this Rye IPA brewed with Young Henry is Sydney’s contribution. In a sea of juicy IPAs, this beer is a drop of resin; the syrupy body brings West Coast flavours, along with layers of cocoa and spice coming in at the finish, and a surprising bite for only 37 IBUs. Collective Arts are known for using cans as canvases, so you could say the design commissioned for each… Read more

Tumut River Brewing Co Deliverance Red IPA & Coffee Milk Stout

Tapped July 16th, 2019
Tumut River's winter 2019 releases pit sweet malts, dark malts, tropical hops and coffee against one another. In one corner is the Deliverance Red IPA, a name that hopefully isn’t suggesting a boat trip down the Tumut River is akin to taking a canoe down the Cahulawassee (although they do have Squealing Pig in their lineup so make of that what you will...). What is clear, however, is the heady mix of tropical fruit, papaya, melon and mango the beer provides against its sweet malt body. Sitting… Read more

Otherside Brewshed Debut Releases

Tapped July 15th, 2019
Typically, we cover new beer releases from a brewery as they come to hand. This used to be a straightforward affair but, if the late twenty-teens have taught us – and most drinkers – anything, it’s that more breweries means more beer. In the case of some, the now weekly new release schedule manifests its own destiny, to be devoured and replenished with something fresh, every Friday, indefinitely, which is most certainly the case for Otherside’s Brewshed at Freo.Social. While their main Myaree… Read more

Bad Shepherd Brew Crew Series 9: Peanut Butter Porter

Tapped July 15th, 2019
For the ninth iteration of their Brew Crew series, Bad Shepherd have given recipe rights to Carl, the brewpub’s head chef. An American football fan, Carl supports the Ohio State Buckeyes and the very American-sounding sweets that share that teams name: Buckeye Candy. According to the internet, Buckeye Candy is peanut butter fudge that’s been dipped in chocolate. So to create a beer in its (and Carl’s) honour the Bad Shepherd team went for a porter base before adding the necessarily level of… Read more

Old Wives Ales Imperial Choc Walnut Brownie Ale

Tapped July 15th, 2019
Among the two dozen new beers brewed for the most recent Carwyn Cellers Canvent Calendar was Old Wives Ales’ Choc Walnut Brownie brown ale. The sweet, chocolaty beer may have been secretly waiting inside fridges at the height of summer but stifling weather should never really stop anyone indulging in chocolate. To up the ante for winter, the team decided to make an imperial version, bringing the 6.2 percent ABV beer up to 8 percent. The resulting bigger beer shares the same sweet and rich chocolate… Read more

Innate & The Monk The Snow Leopard Imperial Stout 2019

Tapped July 15th, 2019
Fresh from their Perth Royal Beer Show Champion Small Brewery award, Innate strike again with a collaboration that brought their relatively near neighbours, The Monk, into the Spearwood brewery. Together, their label art playfully, and welcomely, bucks the dour clad trend of midwinter big black beers: the can story evokes Cold War themes which might be played out by Clancy, le Carre, or Greene – while trying not to be distracted by the near double digit ABV liquid inside. Dark chocolate aromas… Read more

Tallboy & Moose Citrus Got Real & Nectarine Of The Gods & Imposter Importer

Tapped July 15th, 2019
Two fruit-flavoured IPAs and a great pretender of a collab are the latest releases out of Tallboy & Moose’s Preston home. The former include Citrus Got Real (5.9%), an IPA brewed with the citrus-forward mix of Citra, Lemon Drop and Motueka hops and a “backyard tree” worth of lemons. The orange haze is a sign of those flavours lurking within, where juicy orange and lemon sherbet push against a smooth beer with a gentle bitterness. By comparison, Nectarine of the Gods is an IPA focused on… Read more

Tapped July 12th, 2019
Tinkering away beneath Brisbane’s Story Bridge, Felons have served up another limited release for local beer fans, particularly fans of hops. The Double Dry Hopped American Pale Ale (DDH APA) makes use of potent Cryo hops (a concentrated form of hops), featuring varieties Mosaic, Idaho 7, Ekuanot, Amarillo and Loral hops from American hopsmiths Yakima Chief added at two stages in the fermentation process. BentSpoke Brewing Co Big Nut

Tapped July 10th, 2019
The latest beer to make its way into cans as part of BentSpoke’s limited release Drifter series is another popular pour from the Braddon brewpub: Big Nut. The name itself stems from one of the taps at the brewpub, all of which are the work of Peter Rogers. Peter and BentSpoke head brewer Richard Watkins have known each other for years and have their working relationship locked down. CoConspirators Brewing The Park Ranger & The Distributor

Tapped July 10th, 2019
The gypsy brewers at CoConspirators have been busy conspiring with hops of late, with two hazy collaborations released in quick succession. The more restrained of the two was brewed with The Park Hotel in Abbotsford and pays homage to Yogi Bear’s constant foil: The Park Ranger. And, like a walk through Jellystone Park or a raid of the picnic basket, the hazy pale provides a fragrant mix of fruit flavours. Bright Tank Big Red Smeg Head Red IIPA

Tapped July 10th, 2019
Bright Tank’s limited release program continues apace with hip hop and science fiction related pop culture references seemingly the only anchor. Presumably, Wu Tang Clan playing Comic-Con would be the team's dream release party or, in this beer's case, Smeg and the Heads, given the allusion to cult British TV show Red Dwarf. Bruny Island Last Ferry Lager & Rye Smile & Black Pudding

Tapped July 9th, 2019
These three releases from Bruny Island Beer Co are determined to showcase the brewers' diversity. The first deals with a problem that’s surely been faced by many tourists who have made their way to Bruny. With the last ferry leaving the island soon after 7pm, it’s one you don't want to miss. On the other hand, spending another night on an island awash with oysters, cheese and beer doesn’t sounds all that bad.
