New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Bacchus To The Future

Tapped February 2nd, 2016
You can always rely on Brisbane's Bacchus Brewing to deliver something new or unusual. Often both at the same time. But, while such innovative and out there beers tend to be the result of using odd ingredients, pushing things to the extreme or conceiving an entire range of beers that take an idea to the nth degree, this time around Ross Kenrick and his team have added a new dimension. The story starts last year with their event for Sydney Craft Beer Week. It was themed around Back to the Future and… Read more

Old Wives Ales Red Sky At Night

Tapped February 1st, 2016
One of the earliest releases from the Old Wives and, if memory serves correctly, the first to eschew hops as the primary force for good. Here, the brewers opted for a saison then piled on raspberries, specifically "a whole lotta" them. The base beer was kept simple and lean, so there's not too much in the way of the funk, spice or pepper you can find in many saison style beers. Instead, it's light in body and as much there to carry the raspberry character. They lend the beer a soft pink… Read more

Holgate Brewhouse Hop Tart

Tapped January 29th, 2016
In 2015, one of the many limited run beers to make its way from Holgate's baby Tank 9 was Hop Tart, a "Semi Sour Pale Ale" in which the brewers played around with souring bacteria Lactobacillus to create lactic acid and, thus, a spot of sourness within a relatively hoppy ale. To achieve their goal, they chose to naturally sour their wort [the sugary liquid produced early in the brewing process after crushed grains are soaked in hot water] by giving it an extended rest in the company of… Read more

Mountain Goat Rare Breed Japanese Cowboy

Tapped January 27th, 2016
Not long after completing their sale to Asahi, Mountain Goat decided to pay tribute to their new owners in beer form. They created the Japanese Cowboy, the sort of American style IPA they love given a twist in the shape of the use of quirky Japanese hop Sorachi Ace. The draught release was well received so they've brewed more of it, popped it into bottles and are making it their latest Rare Breed release – complete with tasting notes almost entirely presented in Japanese. The Japanese hops are… Read more

La Sirene Wild Tripelle

Tapped January 25th, 2016
Last year, Costa Nikias of Melbourne's farmhouse ale specialists La Sirene announced he was intending to construct a coolship inside the shed where he stores many of his oak barrels. The aim was to be able to spontaneously ferment several thousand litres of wort using the native yeasts and bacteria that exist in the nearby Darebin Creek and Parklands, thus creating an "urban farmhouse" ale. The coolship has been designed and built and is awaiting full installation and more suitable weather… Read more

Rocks Brewing Blueberry Wheat Beer – RETIRED

Tapped January 24th, 2016
It seems that 2015 was the year the team at Rocks Brewing really started stretching its brewing muscles in earnest. Its core range, from pale through porter, has been well and truly nailed down, so they started playing around with fruit beers, barrel-aged beers and sour beers (sometimes all three within the same vessel), releasing brews made with cherry, lychee, pomegranate, passionfruit and more. That’s something they’ve carried on to 2016, with the first limited release of the year being a… Read more

Two Birds Brewing Enigma Pils

Tapped January 23rd, 2016
Every year or two, one of the experimental hop varieties grown by Hop Products Australia proves itself and is released as a commercial variety. The most recent cab off the rank for the Tassie-based company is Enigma, which started making more regular appearances in beers throughout 2015 (as did Melba from fellow Aussie grower Ellerslie Hop). So called due to its complex and multi-faceted characteristics when used in different ways and at different times in the brewing process, Enigma showed such… Read more

Stone & Wood The Forager 2016

Tapped January 21st, 2016
Stone & Wood has kicked off 2016 with a new beer that will be the first in an ongoing seasonal series. It's called The Forager and they say the inspiration, as for many of their beers, comes from their home turf in Northern New South Wales and "the search for wild food and a slower way of living". The intention is that each Forager will feature a different recipe that makes use of herbs and spices sourced locally. That said, while past releases – particularly under their Mash Collective… Read more

Van Dieman Motor Mouth IPA & Summer Berry Grisette

Tapped January 21st, 2016
With each passing year, it seems that Will Tatchell at Van Dieman is having more and more fun. He added a fine barley wine aged for a year in muscat barrels to his lineup late last year, is planning to create an "estate ale" featuring ingredients all sourced on his family's farm and is now embarking on a spot of blending at this summer's Tassie beer festivals. Making up part of those blends are two new releases which you can also enjoy as standalones. The first is Motormouth IPA, named… Read more

Big Shed Brewing Concern Jetty Jumper

Tapped January 18th, 2016
Summer's here and when it hits Adelaide it can be pretty fierce. Indeed, when it hits the Big Shed Brewing Concern, as it did on The Crafty Pint's first visit to their Royal Park home, it can feel fiercer still, what with their home being inside a big shed full of beer-making machinery. As such, it's easy to imagine the team there sweating through another day and craving something refreshing they can put away in volume without doing too much to knock them sideways. Which is where Jetty Jumper comes… Read more

3 Ravens Little Raven Double IPA

Tapped January 14th, 2016
When they took delivery of this year's new harvest hops from the USA, the 3 Ravens brewers decided to do something to mark the occasion. And that was to cram a heap of them into a beer in the not-so-little tank where their Little Ravens limited release beers are brewed. And, despite being "aggressively" dry hopped with a "rather absurd amount" of Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe and Amarillo, it remains, by recent Little Ravens standards, quite normal: no weird ingredients or treatments,… Read more

Mornington Peninsula Brewery Indefatigable Triple IPA

Tapped January 13th, 2016
As reasons for brewing a beer go, creating one that punters might struggle to pronounce at the bar is one of the more spurious we've come across. Although given Indefatigable is an 11 percent ABV hop explosion, we imagine anyone going back to the bar for a second or third might struggle to pronounce it even if it was called Bob. Inspired by the extremely hopped ales popularised by West Coast USA brewers, it's tagged as a "triple IPA" thus slotting in at the upper end of the brewery's series… Read more

Bridge Road & Doctor's Orders Berliner Weisse Pack

Tapped January 12th, 2016
Tis the season of the Berliner Weisse. And why not, as when done well, there's little more suited to a hot Aussie summer (or refreshing one's palate mid sampling session). One of the first brewers to play around with the style here, Darren Robinson of Doctor's Orders, has joined forces with one of the country's foremost collaborators to create not one, not two, not three, but four of them. The original Berliner Weisse (whose few remaining brewers must be looking at what's happening globally with… Read more

Blackman's & 3 Ravens Sylvan Berry Berliner Weisse

Tapped January 11th, 2016
If you're going to brew your first Berliner Weisse, you're as good doing it in the company of 3 Ravens' brewer Brendan O'Sullivan as anyone. He's picked up several awards for his home brewed takes on the style and is the man mainly responsible for the series of tastelessly tasty takes on the style released under Ravens' sibling label Mash Brewing, one of which took out a trophy in WA's awards last year. And that's what Blackman's has done, with brewer Renn hooking up with Brendan as well as a local… Read more

Young Henrys Old Master

Tapped January 11th, 2016
While the great number of new beers appearing these days means there are ample opportunities to get along to an interesting beer launch, it’s difficult to recall one at such a unique setting as that of the official release of Old Master: a private art tour containing works from some of history’s greatest artists. The background to the beer, and the launch, is the touring exhibition The Greats: Masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland which is on show at the Art Gallery of New South… Read more

Bad Shepherd Raspberry Wheat

Tapped January 6th, 2016
The first seasonal release from Cheltenham's new brewpub Bad Shepherd is a suitably summery affair. It's a wheat beer – the sort of light, fruity, zesty beer suited to the hotter weather anyway – that's been enhanced with the addition of 150kg of raspberry puree. Thus it pours red – "bright red" according to the brewery. Indeed, "so red that people sometimes try to spread it on their toast." He describes it as "slightly tart, with a creamy mouthfeel and a big fruity… Read more

Newstead Brewing Cyclone Season Summer Lager

Tapped December 30th, 2015
Even escaping to the other side of the planet for the holiday season, it seems we can't escape the floods. The top half of England is currently under water as Queensland braces itself for cyclone season. Thankfully, the good sorts at Newstead Brewing have been beavering away to create something for their locals to look forward to in the shape of the Cyclone Season Summer Lager. It takes its lead from the lagers of Germany, although not the gentle Helles style from Bavaria that most brewers look to… Read more

Nomad Brewing Supersonic Jet Lag

Tapped December 30th, 2015
For their first birthday release, the team at Nomad did a little tinkering under the hood and brewed a one-off, super-sized version of their regular Jet Lag IPA. Named Supersonic, what they’ve effectively done is double the ingredients to create a double IPA that has its roots in the American take on the style but its feet firmly planted in Aussie soil. The malts have been upped to provide a stronger and sweeter backbone and it’s this which is most immediately apparent, along with the use of… Read more

Mountain Goat In Breed: Alana Banana

Tapped December 29th, 2015
The one-off "In Breed" series of releases continues at Mountain Goat, with brewer Alana Rees the latest to create a beer for the brewery. If you've not met her, then we can assure you that the decal image accompanying the keg-only release is a remarkably good reimagining of her as a German banana (admittedly, we've never seen her in lederhosen). We're not sure whether she chose the German hefeweizen style for her brew because it allowed for the rhyming title Alana Banana or because she… Read more

Moon Dog Jumping The Shark 2015

Tapped December 22nd, 2015
The third Jumping the Shark annual special from the Moon Dog crew has been long in the making. A pre-barrel, pre-freeze distilling sampler went on at the brewery months ago but the finished product has only just been released in bottles for the end of the year. Just in time for summer, in fact – the perfect time to sit down with an 18.4 percent ABV rye imperial stout that spent four months in rye whisky barrels from Tasmania's Belgrove Distillery. According to Moon Dog senor brewer Adrian McNulty:… Read more
