New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Mornington Peninsula Brewery Sacchariferous Stout

Tapped June 24th, 2015
If there's one thing Mornington Peninsula Brewery does particularly well, it's dark beers. OK, so it does lots of beers very well, but any lineup that includes their Brown, Porter and Imperial Stout is a winner in anyone's books. For the winter of 2015, they're adding a few more too. A black lager came and went without us noticing (oops) but we were back on the case with a new stout. Going by the name Sacchariferous Stout (with the long word meaning "containing sugar") it is a sweet / milk… Read more

Blackman's Brewery Rye Dark Lager

Tapped June 24th, 2015
Renn Blackman is something of a rarity among local craft brewers in that he has rather a soft spot for lagers. In part, we assume it comes down to time spent at Camden Town in London, a trailblazing contemporary British micro that made its name with a German style lager when all others were focused on making ales. With Camden Town founder Jasper Cuppaidge heading to Torquay for a Good Beer Week collaboration feast, Renn had even more reason to add to his lager collection as the pair of them served… Read more

Blackman's Brewery Versus Camden Town Imperial Pils

Tapped June 24th, 2015
Lager loving brewers Renn (Blackman's) and former boss Jasper (Camden Town) joined forces to create a collaboration beer that was launched as part of their joint event as part of the 2015 Good Beer Week. It was one of four lagers poured on the night – two of them launching there and now making their way to a few other venues in Victoria and New South Wales. For their joint effort, they aimed high: this imperial pilsner nudges 8 percent AVB. And they also plundered an array of locally grown Aussie… Read more

Young Henrys Young Mussels

Tapped June 19th, 2015
Most times when you see mussels added to a beer, it’s in a stout where the dark roast characters are able to comfortably incorporate a briny kick. But adding mussels to a witbier is a different prospect. There’s very little in the way of ballsy malt to mask the musk of the sea, so the brewer must be diligent in their calculations of how much to use. Yet the team at Young Henrys was generous in its estimations, adding 12 kilograms of mussels and, even more unusually, 12 kilograms of mussel stock.… Read more

Moon Dog & Beer DeLuxe Splice of Heaven

Tapped June 19th, 2015
Many great, rare, vintage and colourful beers decorated the taps of Beer DeLuxe during Good Beer Week when the Fed Square venue was Festival Hub. Among the most colourful was one that the staff at the venue had conceived and brewed with the guys at Moon Dog before the festival. In a change from the brewery's current penchant for recreating other beverages in beer form, this one saw the joint venturers look to create one of their favourite ice creams: Splice. And, while the festival is passed for… Read more

Seven Sheds ELF ESB

Tapped June 17th, 2015
To mark its seventh birthday, Tasmania's Seven Sheds once again made full use of ingredients on its doorstep – literally. Originally a "very limited release" ESB (Extra Special Bitter) but now regularly brewed, ELF features two hop varieties grown at Seven Sheds within metres of the brew shed. They are the ultra rare Leggett and English variety Fuggle. A third variety, Ella, was grown at Bushy Park elsewhere on the island. The first batch was titled 77 in reference to the name of the… Read more

Hargreaves Hill Old Brown

Tapped June 17th, 2015
In his brewery's 11th year, Hargreaves Hill founder Simon Walkenhorst reckons they've made their best beer yet. The Old Brown was snuck out at a few places during Good Beer Week but most of the kegs were held back until the noise had died down a little. It's another beer, like those just released by Bridge Road and 8 Wired, that looks to the unique producers of Belgium for inspiration: an Old Brown (or Oud Bruin / Flanders Brown) that originates in the Flemish part of the country. It's also the parti-gyle… Read more

Bridge Road & 8 Wired Nieuw Bruins

Tapped June 16th, 2015
If you're in any way interested in beer, it's hard not to be excited by the times in which we live. While around 60 percent of sales within the "craft" market may be made up of pale and golden ales, there's so much else going on – particularly on the fringes. And particularly on the fringe where people are playing with yeasts and bacteria. It's probably the most risky area in which to experiment but one that is producing some fascinating results. Young Henrys Pink Lightning

Tapped June 16th, 2015
With Young Henrys' collaboration with the Bottled Lightning Co pouring a subdued pastel pink colour, the beer’s appearance reminds you of some of the funky fruit beers of Belgium. Certainly, you wouldn’t guess that it’s actually built on a golden ale base, making it, in effect a pink golden ale. That said, it does have a certain degree of tartness thanks to the addition of hibiscus (which is also the cause of the colour) though the main flavour you’re left with is that of elderflower. Grand Ridge WHOA 2015 & Kellerbier

Tapped June 15th, 2015
There's not much they don't do at Grand Ridge's home in Gippsland. Victoria's longest established microbrewery (some eight years older than Mountain Goat) brews beer, runs a pub and restaurant, offers accommodation and rears cattle fed on its spent grain to be served in the restaurant. It also grows its own hops: German variety Hallertau and American Chinook. And the two appear in the brewery's latest limited releases. The WHOA! – or Wet Hopped Oatmeal Ale – is one that's been around before,… Read more

3 Ravens Druid 2015

Tapped June 12th, 2015
One of the beers that helped 3 Ravens secure the 2014 Champion Small Australian Brewery title was this Pedro Ximenez barrel-aged Belgian quad that was former head brewer Adrian McNulty's attempt to create a beer as close to the sherry that once inhabited the barrels. It was an honourable venture and one carried off with aplomb. While Adrian has moved on to pastures new, the barrels remained and his replacement Brendan O'Sullivan has kept the Druid alive. The Monk Oakey Dokey Oaked IPA

Tapped June 12th, 2015
OK. So we're going with Oaked IPA in the title of this beer listing so that it sits nicely within the page. But, according to the man behind it, it's technically an "Oak-aged-American-Belgo-Double-India-Pale-Ale". Breaking that down into its various parts, brewer Craig Eulenstein (pictured with an Oakey Dokey) tells us the beer features seven different malts, including Abbey malt and Belgian biscuit malt as well as a small portion of rye and smoke malt, that it was fermented with a Belgian… Read more

Moon Dog Ogden Nash's Pash Rash

Tapped June 11th, 2015
If it looks like a stout and tastes like a stout, then it's a stout, right? Well, maybe not if it smells like kids' lollies... The latest beer to graduate from the twisted collective consciousness at Melbourne's Moon Dog to a single keg brew to be tapped on a Thursday and then finally get the nod of approval as a nationwide packaged release is one of their most surprising. Just like the black IPAs that take the concept to its extreme – creating a black beer that smells and tastes utterly like a… Read more

Mountain Goat Barrel Breed Barley Wine

Tapped June 10th, 2015
From a business sense, as Goat co-owner Dave Bonighton pointed out to us recently, if you're going to win the top gong at the Australian International Beer Awards – that of Champion Australian Beer – you don't necessarily want it to be for a beer of which you have bugger all and would be hard pressed to recreate. On the other hand, as you approach your 18th birthday as the oldest microbrewery in your hometown, it doesn't hurt to take out such a title with a beer that shows the young pups you… Read more

Red Hill Brewery Red Smoke

Tapped June 10th, 2015
The third beer in the #tenredbeers mission Red Hill Brewery set out upon to mark their tenth anniversary was also their entry for this year's GABS. Following a plum saison and a red tripel, they opted to take inspiration from another region of Europe, this time the smoked beers (rauchbiers) of Germany's Bamberg. And they kept enough of the beer back to package some and slap another distinctive piece of artwork on the label too. The beer is red in the blood orange sense of red and has plenty going… Read more

Little Creatures Furphy (packaged)

Tapped June 8th, 2015
When they opened the doors of their brewery in Geelong, the Little Creatures team decided to offer up a gift for their new locals. It took the shape of Furphy, a new beer made with all Victorian ingredients and with challenge-free sessionability in mind. The "Refreshing Ale" was originally only available around the city of Geelong but has now (mid 2015) been offered up to the rest of Victoria too. Murray's Wild Thing, Wild Thing Chocolate & Night Demon

Tapped June 6th, 2015
It's been a tradition at Murray's in recent years to celebrate the start of winter with the release of multiple big, dark beasts. Since former head brewer Graeme Mahy became returned head brewer Graeme Mahy it also seems to be becoming a habit to release multiple new beers every month. So this year's Dark Beer Month at Murray's promises to be a busy one. With their first birthday falling on the Queens' Birthday long weekend, BentSpoke figured they'd treat their customers to more than one birthday beer. Four, in fact. One was released each day from Friday to Monday, with the first to be tapped the third in a series of historical beers created in partnership with local beer historian David Hughes (pictured below right). Lord Nelson Victory Bitter

Tapped June 5th, 2015
The brewing team at Sydney's oldest pub has dipped into its catalogue of beers again for another one-off release. This time around, they've opted for the Victory Bitter, perhaps the beer in their lineup that most encapsulates the ethos behind the brewpub when Blair Hayden returned from England in the mid-1980s and opened one of the few brewpubs of the first wave of contemporary craft beer in Australia to survive. It's an English style bitter and a pretty one at that, pouring an appealing copper colour… Read more

Boatrocker Big Love Suburban Red

Tapped June 5th, 2015
