New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Bright Brewery Oktoberfest

Tapped October 3rd, 2013
Having released the likes of a massive Barleywine and a tiny midstrength along with a fruity sour in recent months, the latest release from Bright is rather more middle of the road. Being October, it's an Oktoberfest style beer, aka a Vienna Lager, and ticks all the boxes of the style. It's a bright, copper-hued affair with biscuity, bready aromas and a touch of subtle German hop too, with those bready characteristics following through in the mouth with some soft toffee flavours in a beer that has… Read more

Grand Ridge Dark Side of Juniper

Tapped October 2nd, 2013
According to the team at Grand Ridge, Victoria's oldest established microbrewery, there were people out there that didn't know they'd bottled their entry for this year's Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular. It was appear that among those people was The Crafty Pint - as we've just been given a little tap on the shoulder by the brewery to tell us that yes, it was bottled and, yes, if anyone want to get their hands on Dark Side of Juniper, they still can. There are a few cases (and a couple of kegs)… Read more

Moon Dog Jumping The Shark 2013

Tapped September 26th, 2013
The launch of what is intended to be a series of annual specials from Moon Dog has something of the PR strategist's approach about it. Namely: own the attack before your opponent can. For the uninitiated in leather jacket-wearing, quiff-haired pop culture references (which turns out to be quite a lot of you if Crafty's mates are any guide), "jumping the shark" refers to an episode of Happy Days in which The Fonz jumps a shark on waterskis (while still wearing his leather jacket). Australian Brewery Extra Hoppy Ale

Tapped September 25th, 2013
Australia's craft beer in cans pioneers have been busy of late. They've made a successful trip to India, where they will soon be sending their Pale Ale and Pilsner, and are exploring other overseas markets too. They've also been busy touring the bars and bottleshops of Melbourne looking to spread the word about what they've got going on in Rouse Hill rather closer to home too. The tour of Melbourne has been carried out with a few cases of their latest seasonal release, entitled "The Extra Hoppy… Read more

Boatrocker Misfit

Tapped September 24th, 2013
Why release one Belgian style beer into the world when you can release two at the same time? Regular readers of The Crafty Pint may recall a series of travel pieces Matt Houghton from Boatrocker wrote for the site on a trip to Belgium a couple of years ago. While there, he visited a number of breweries, large and small, sampling beers but also picking brains about brewing Belgian styles. Despite having a core range based around hoppy New World styles, he's always maintained that this is where his… Read more

Boatrocker Ramjet

Tapped September 24th, 2013
The third in Boatrocker's recent raft of limited releases is another beast of a beer - the second to tip the scales above 10 percent ABV, no less. Called Ramjet after the engines that used an extra fuel source to go further, it's an imperial stout that takes initial inspiration from the style's home by using all English ingredients. It then deviates a little from tradition in that it spent a couple of months inside former Starward whisky barrels from the New World Distillery. The brewers reckon… Read more

Boatrocker Sterk & Donker

Tapped September 23rd, 2013
It might sound like a duo of techno producers who would have supported Sven Vath on his 17-hour marathon sessions in Frankfurt in the early 90s, but it turns out Sterk & Donker actually means merely Strong & Dark. One of the first raft of limited releases from Boatrocker's new brewery, it comes with a pretty involved production behind it. Before making the beer, the two Matts that brew Boatrocker beers created their own Belgian style candi syrup, using multiple heat treatments and quick temperature… Read more

Moon Dog Mummy Have A Bite

Tapped September 20th, 2013
Presumably launched to coincide with the start of the Royal Melbourne Show (or more likely because they had secured some calvados barrels), the second new release of the week from Moon Dog is touted as a Toffee Apple Amber Ale. In adding calvados to the list of barrels they've dragged through the brewery, pumped full of booze (and sometimes bacteria), emptied and released into the world - think shiraz, bourbon, whisky, rum, Cognac... - they set about recreating that tooth-rotting, appley-underneath… Read more

Moon Dog Bock Naked

Tapped September 19th, 2013
It's all go at Moon Dog these days. The brewery is expanding - mainly so they can fill more tanks with Love Tap, they're looking to invest in lots of new gear, are about the launch their first annual "Jumping The Shark" beer and have big plans for the brewery itself too. Amongst that, they're still knocking out the odd beer too, odd in all senses, obviously. Latest cab off the rank is Bock Naked, a "Dry Chipotle'd" strong German style lager. Young Henrys Brew Tang Clam

Tapped September 18th, 2013
Brew one mollusc stout in a year and you're OK. Brew two and it's fair to say you're committed to the cause. Release a third and, well, some might say you should be committed. But when has sanity ever held sway with the good burghers of Newtown's Young Henrys? Thus it is that they have completed a wintry trilogy of beers featuring creatures from the briney depths, with the Brew Tang Clam following Mother Shucka and â?¡ Mussel out the brewery's doors. Red Duck Gruitest

Tapped September 17th, 2013
A couple of years back, Red Duck's brewer made one of his regular ventures back in time to create a beer with its origins in Medieval, pre-hop Britain. Canute the Gruit featured homemade nettle juice, deliberately scorched grains and various other unusual ingredients to create a beer that was smokey, sour and odd, but over time developed into something really rather good. He followed it up with Gruiter, described as a "Renaissance" take on the style that lacked the complexity of the former… Read more

Red Hill Double Barrel Imperial Stout 2013

Tapped September 13th, 2013
The jewel in Red Hill's crown has been adorned with some extra sparkles. For only the second time in their history, the brewers on the Mornington Peninsula poured some of their highly-rated and much sought after Imperial Stout into whisky barrels to create this "Double Barrel" version. A small amount was debuted at their Imperial Stout-flavoured Secret Stash weekend and now what little is left has departed the brewery in old school 500ml bottles and is cropping up on a handful of shelves.… Read more

Moo Brew Trippel

Tapped September 11th, 2013
The first beer in what we're promised will be a series of barrel-aged beers from Tasmania's Moo Brew is a Belgian Tripel. It was flagged up on the site a few weeks back and has since made its way to beer bars across the land. It's this year's Spring Seasonal from Moo and, as such, is a keg only release. It's also, as the name suggests, a Belgian style Tripel, albeit one granted an additional "p", perhaps in tribute to the "oo" in Moo. Either way, one of the Moo Crew tells us he… Read more

Bridge Road / Grain Store Tony Brown

Tapped September 10th, 2013
Of all the things a particularly active anti-alcohol campaigner could wish for, having a beer named in their honour is probably not that high on the list. But clearly a chap by the name of Tony Brown has been enough of a success at operating at Newcastle's one man "fun police" that in coming up with a name for the Brown Ale they've brewed with Beechworth's Bridge Road, the team at the Grain Store could think of nothing more suitable. Colonial Brewing Project 3: Mission Brown

Tapped September 6th, 2013
It seems that the deeper you delve into the minds of the brewers at Margaret River's Colonial Brewery, the murkier things get. There's an obsession with "Gary", something we don't fully understand but with which we totally empathise given there's something of a "Gary" obsession here too. Something we do understand is that there's a new series of limited releases coming out under the Project Beer banner - we know this as we ran a story on it. Grifter Brewing Co Tortoise & The Hop

Tapped September 2nd, 2013
The Tortoise & The Hop pilsner is a beer the Grifter Brewing Company couldn't have made when they first started on their brewing adventure. That's not to say they couldn't have done it technically, but physically. You see, lagers (of which pilsner is, of course, one) need to spend considerably longer fermenting when compared to their ale counterparts. And when you're brewing in someone elses brewery, as the Grifters do out of the very busy and predominantly ale-focused Young Henrys, it's not… Read more

Red Duck Licky

Tapped August 29th, 2013
We've been bouncing emails back and forth with Red Duck's brewer this week and he's got the usual array of fun stuff lined up for release over the coming months. Pretty much anything you can think of and he'll be doing it to one style of beer or another and sticking it in a bottle soon enough. The first of the latest batch of limited run releases is Licky. Mornington's Little Irish Red

Tapped August 27th, 2013
Having achieved a podium finish in the most recent Crafty Pint Blind Tasting for their booziest beer, Mornington Peninsula Brewery is exploring the other end of the beer spectrum with its lowest ABV release yet. The Little Irish Red is an idea that's been bouncing around head brewer AG's mind for a while and now sees the light of day. The idea was to "show that it is indeed possible to pack some flavour and body into a low ABV beer" and, what's more, he tells us: "I think I have done… Read more

Mountain Goat IRA (India Red Ale)

Tapped August 26th, 2013
About time too! Having embarked on a run of IPA variants over the past couple of years - India Pale Ale, Double IPA, Coffee IPA, Thorny Goat, Gypsy & The Goat, Before The Dawn, Rye IPA (RIPA), Hip Hop Hooray IPA - the brewers at Mountain Goat had been busying themselves with other styles. But this week, like a subcontinental version of Sesame Street, their beer is once again brought to you by the word "India". And the word "hops" too. McLaren Vale EXP 4

Tapped August 19th, 2013
There's a lot to be said for US-inspired brown ales. After all, what's not to like in a style that is based around ensuring there's lots of rich malt flavour and plenty of big hops joining in the party too? It's the style the brewing team at McLaren Vale has plumped for as the fourth release in its occasional EXP limited release, keg-only series. They've plumped for some pretty punchy American hop varieties too - Simcoe and newcomers El Dorado and Zythos - which have been pitted against five malts.… Read more
