New Beers

Barely a day goes by without another seasonal or one-off special flying out of an Australian brewery (if not ten). Here and in our weekly newsletter, we'll bring you news and, if we've sampled them, our take on as many of them as possible. Happy hunting!

Lord Nelson Victory Bitter

Tapped June 5th, 2015
The brewing team at Sydney's oldest pub has dipped into its catalogue of beers again for another one-off release. This time around, they've opted for the Victory Bitter, perhaps the beer in their lineup that most encapsulates the ethos behind the brewpub when Blair Hayden returned from England in the mid-1980s and opened one of the few brewpubs of the first wave of contemporary craft beer in Australia to survive. It's an English style bitter and a pretty one at that, pouring an appealing copper colour… Read more

Boatrocker Big Love Suburban Red

Tapped June 5th, 2015
There's been much to celebrate in the world of Boatrocker in the first half of 2015. The Braeside brewery took out the Champion Small Australian Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards a few weeks after sweeping the People's Choice for the third time at the Good Beer Week Gala Showcase. Boatrocker also celebrated investment from Made By HAND, the business run by several of the men formerly involved in Little World Beverages (Little Creatures), which has been used to accelerate the development… Read more

Mash Brewing Berliner Weisse Trio

Tapped June 4th, 2015
At their eastern outpost, 3 Ravens' brewery in Thornbury, Mash Brewing now has a tank dedicated permanently to the creation of sour beers. It's a passion of brewer Brendan O'Sullivan and the first beers to come out of the tank are this trio of Berliner Weisse style brews. You can read all about their inception – artwork and all here – and can also now buy them to try for yourself with the bottles all waxed and ready to go, complete with cards hanging around their necks like collectibles instead… Read more

Abbey Collaby V: Wet Hopped DIPA

Tapped June 4th, 2015
The launch of the Abbey Collaby has quickly become a Good Beer Week institution, enticing massed crowds to Mountain Goat on the Wednesday night for a first taste of whatever concoction the minds at Goat, Moon Dog and Matilda Bay have come up with. In 2014, a rather drinkable 10.5 percent barley wine ensured that some of the attendees knew they'd had a night out. So, in 2015, they toned things down. And brewed a rather drinkable 10.3 percent double IPA. And put a keg of the barley wine on for good… Read more

Modus Operandi L90 Imperial IPA

Tapped June 1st, 2015
For the uninitiated, the L90 is the longest commuter bus route in Sydney, winding its way more than 40 kilometres from the CBD up through the northern beaches. With no train lines in the area, the service is something of a lifeline for the carless of the northern suburbs and, for anyone wanting to travel to Modus Operandi, it’s also the most viable option for getting to and from the Mona Vale brewery. So when the brewing team put their heads together for ideas for their first entry to the GABS… Read more

Smiling Samoyed Hop Harvest Ale 2015

Tapped June 1st, 2015
They make little secret of their love for Aussie hop Galaxy at Smiling Samoyed. So when the hop harvest in Tasmania rolled around in 2015 they secured some fresh hops straight from Hop Products Australia to go into a one-off hop harvest brew. The hops were picked, shipped overnight and added to the brew the next day. The beer has a slightly leaner malt base than the nearest beer to it in the brewery's lineup, 12 Paws, with the Galaxy adding some passionfruit and orange to the biscuit sweetness as… Read more

Mash Brewing Sarcasm II

Tapped May 31st, 2015
It says something about Mash head brewer Charlie Hodgson's standards that his thoughts on Sarcasm Mk I, a double IPA that was released a few weeks ago, mostly in WA, were pretty critical; "didn't really get what I wanted"; "a touch sweet, a little bit boozy and a little confused." It was one of the beers on tap at the Royston for Pint of Origin WA during Good Beer Week, meaning we got to have a taste. Not only was it far from the sweetest of big IPAs we've sampled, according to… Read more

2 Brothers HazElla

Tapped May 28th, 2015
While the likes of their Taxi Pilsner, Growler and Grizz do much of the heavy lifting for 2 Brothers, they're probably as widely known around the beer world for some of their bigger, maltier treats. From the big Belgian James Brown to the trophy winning Guv'nor barley wine to a series of highly ranked GABS People's Choice beers with the sweeter toothed in mind, when they've aimed high, they've won fans. For this year's GABS, they did just that again and create HazElla, an imperial brown ale featuring… Read more

Shenanigans Brewing / Platinum Liquor Bah'sdin Stout

Tapped May 24th, 2015
Ahead of Good Beer Week 2015, Shenanigans Brewing were approached by Adam Bellamy, proprietor of Sydney’s Platinum Liquor stores, to create a one-off collaboration to be launched at a re-screening of Martin Scorsese’s classic Boston-based Irish mob film The Departed. The beer and film pairing is something Bellamy had worked with before, previously teaming up with HopDog BeerWorks on La Boufe’s Bète Noire, a bourbon-aged American stock ale made to pair with the Coen Brothers’ rough and tough… Read more

3 Ravens / Thunder Road / CUB Girt By 3

Tapped May 21st, 2015
There was a little frisson of excitement at the end of last year's Australian International Beer Awards. For the past few years, it has been practice for the Champion Australian Breweries to join forces to create a collaborative brew to be launched at the following year's dinner. With Thunder Road Brewing named as Champion Medium Brewery and CUB taking out the Large Brewery title, it raised the prospect of two breweries who knew each other best from a bitter court battle in which the former tried,… Read more

Mountain Goat Surefoot Stout (Cans)

Tapped May 20th, 2015
When Mountain Goat launched in 1997, their first beer – Hightail – was pretty radical for its days: a hoppy, malty amber ale. But there was discussion at the time that they should go a step further and kick things off with this beer instead, the Surefoot Stout, to really set the cat among the pigeons. Today, it's one of only two beers that survived the brewery's change in direction a few years ago that saw the Pale and Organic IPA discontinued and Steam Ale arrive. And it's one that has been… Read more

Smiling Samoyed Seasonal Release ESB

Tapped May 20th, 2015
What could be more autumnal than an autumnal coloured beer inspired by the sort of beers found in cosy English boozers? Probably a few things, but we reckon this ESB from SA's Smiling Samoyed is pretty darn well suited to the season for which it was brewed. It's a limited release beer inspired by English Extra Special Bitters and plays a very straight bat: East Kent Goldings hops add unobtrusive floral aromas to a beer awash with creamy nutty and toffee malts and some raisin like fruity esters. Nail Brewing Gareth Skywalker Golden IPA

Tapped May 19th, 2015
Throughout Good Beer Week 2015, WA stablemates Feral and Nail have been lining up some beer battles: taking over taps and challenging the crowds to decide who makes the better beers. Perhaps it's why Nail's John Stallwood has summoned the Force for his latest short run release, the Gareth Skywalker, named after Gareth Tarrant, the man who caught the attacker who put John into a coma in the incident that almost killed him last decade. The beer brewed in Gareth's honour is Nail's first IPA and also… Read more

Stone & Wood Stone Beer 2015

Tapped May 16th, 2015
Earlier this year, Stone & Wood once again invited friends from inside and outside the beer world to their Byron Bay home for the annual brewing of their Stone Beer – the one that involves heating volcanic rocks from Fiji in a fire on the driveway before dropping them into the kettle then transferring the liquid to the fermenter. Matt King, our Crafty Pint SA, was there to ensure the brew went smoothly by drinking beer as it took place up, right up until the rocks were added not too long before… Read more

3 Ravens Little Ravens Oak-Aged American Imperial Stout

Tapped May 15th, 2015
Last year, 3 Ravens announced they were going to make full use of some of the smaller tanks in their brewery to launch small, experimental batches of beer under the Little Ravens banner. An India Saison appeared and then they got rather busy expanding the rest of their brewery. However, hot on the heels of the announcement of their sour program comes a Little Raven that is in no way little although most definitely comes with hue of raven. It's an American imperial stout that has spent time in oak… Read more

Mountain Goat Imperial Pilsner AKA Storm Trooper

Tapped May 12th, 2015
Somehow, given their growing popularity across the land, Mountain Goat recently found themselves with time to leave a couple of tanks full of beer for a few weeks. Thus they filled both with an imperial pilsner. The plan, after some experiments on a small scale with a friend from the world of gin, was to see how an imperial gin pilsner might pan out. Sadly, the juniper berries didn't like the beer; happily, only one tank was used for the experiment so, while there were tears (gin is called Mother's… Read more

Murray's Brewing Benny Belgian Ale

Tapped May 10th, 2015
The new beers keep coming at a fair old trot from the new brewing team at Murray's. This time around, complete with the somewhat troubling decal artwork, it's a Belgian ale called Benny. More precisely, it's their take on a Belgian red ale. It's described as having a "light reddish/brown colour from the European crystal malts" plus "a malt aroma and flavour of light caramel, as well as a slight banana and clove profile from the yeast." It's got a fair bit of punch too at 6.5 percent… Read more

Little Creatures Return of the Dread

Tapped May 8th, 2015
As they prepare to commence building the new venue for sister brewery White Rabbit at their home in Geelong, there's another change afoot in the world of Little Creatures, albeit not such a dramatic one. They are introducing regular seasonal releases in 330ml stubbies from the Creatures brew crew, with the first setting sail for winter. Australian Brewery & Feral Brewing Storm Trooper Imperial Pilsner

Tapped May 7th, 2015
We've long felt that the Australian Brewery brews one of the country’s finest pilsners. And when The Crafty Pint was making this point while enjoying a family BBQ with Feral and Nail Brewing at the start of the year, we discovered that Feral head brewer Brendan Varis felt the same. Indeed, he felt so strongly about it that he had made plans to brew an imperial version with his Australian Brewery counterpart, Neal Cameron. It was something that had been mooted for a while but which only raised its… Read more

Temple Brewing / Royal Mail Hotel Season's Harvest

Tapped May 6th, 2015
In its various guises, Temple Brewing has undertaken quite the array of collaborations. They've brewed twice with Frank Peifer, head brewer at the world's oldest established brewery Weihenstephan. Last weekend they hosted a mass collaboration between the brewers affected by a failed supplier to create an Eastern Coast IPA. They've brewed with the Local Taphouse Ale Stars and also created the People's Pint in a competition we ran a few years back asking the people of Australia to come up with a beer. Their… Read more
