Stomping Ground Brewing Co

It is a little known piece of Australian brewing history that, in the late 1800s, the Collingwood neighbourhood had as many as 40 breweries, the highest density ever in Australia, before amalgamations and buyouts saw them all closed by the early 1900s.

While this little slice of history is not often discussed, it was certainly in the minds of Stomping Ground founders Steve Jeffares, Guy Greenstone and their new partner (and longtime venue manager) Justin Joiner, when trying to find a name for their very own brewery and beer hall. The 1500 square metre space on the corner of Gipps and Islington Streets is the realisation of a dream the trio have had for quite some time: to give Collingwood a brewery again, and deliver a new local for people in the process. A new stomping ground, if you will.

The much loved and awarded branches of The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst and St Kilda have given the trio the space to tap an incredibly diverse range of outstanding beers they wish everyone was drinking, and the ever growing GABS Beer, Cider & Food Fest in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland has paved the way for breweries to experiment with ingredients like never before. But, for Steve, Guy and Justin there has always been a gap – they wanted to brew their own great beer, create a venue inspired by the many world class breweries and brewpubs they have visited overseas, and provide an exceptional beer experience for as many people as possible.

The search for the right building took far longer than they wished, as always seems to be the way. But, in 2014, they found the one they’d been waiting for and, after more than 18 months of bureaucracy and planning, set about converting the sawtooth roofed warehouse into an industrial style beer hall, garden and restaurant, and installing the highly regarded Matt Marinich as venue manager. All those spaces have a view of the brewery’s tanks and are set around a vast central bar from which the custom tap fonts and hand pumps can pour as many as 26 of Stomping Ground Brewing Co’s creations (and occasionally those of guest breweries) at one time.

Despite the swathes of exposed brick, steel, glass and recycled timber, the entire venue is bright, airy and welcoming, thanks in large part to the partially retractable roof over the beer garden, where metal chairs, communal tables and a kid’s playhouse made from recycled materials demonstrate the venue’s "come one, come all" nature.

This is a place you could as easily have lunch with your grandmother, sister and your sister’s five kids as you could settle in for a beer tasting session with a few mates on a Saturday night. The menu offers up a broad range of dishes, from your classic pub burger and pizzas straight from their Italian wood oven, to more refined plates such as roasted pumpkin, mussels, and seasonal salads.

But if it’s the beer you’re keen on, what is it you’d be tasting?

Stomping Ground offers a wide range of beer styles with the intention to offer something for everyone – wherever you are on your beer journey. Since opening, head brewer Ashur Hall tried his hand at dozens of beer styles, including the popular Laneway Lager, Gipps St Pale Ale, One Eyed IPA and Bearbrass Nitro Milk Stout. But, with customers lapping up the variety of beers on offer, they've been joined by beers as diverse as a rauchbier collaboration with Stone & Wood, a double IPA named after Hawthorn AFL legend Robert "Dipper" DiPierdomenico, a Berliner Weisse with added syrups, and more besides.

Taking on board lessons from their venues and festival, the team has chosen to categorise beers as either easy drinking, intermediate or challenging to help you navigate the wide selection too.

Before opening their doors in August 2016, and to ensure Ashur was on the same page as them, Steve and Guy took their brewer for a trip Stateside, introducing him to some of the US breweries and bars that had so inspired their latest venture. These were venues that hit a sweet spot between being a beer lover’s dream venue and somewhere locals could claim as their own.

That commitment to a wider vision should ensure Stomping Ground doesn't lose sight of its core goal – to return a slice of brewing history to Collingwood.

Stomping Ground Hop Stomper IPA

Tapped May 24th, 2018
If there's a downside to the Good Beer Week/GABS marathon, particularly if you're involved in hosting events, appearing on panels and taking tours, it's that it can overwhelm pretty much everything else, both in the lead up and for its duration. And that's been the case here, with Hop Stomper appearing in cans from Stomping Ground just before the festival, a sample making its way to Crafty Towers on the night of the IBA's Independence Seal launch and sampling only taking place a fortnight later... Stomping Ground Gipps St Pale Ale (Cans)

Tapped January 17th, 2018
When the team at Stomping Ground fired up its canning line for the first time at the end of 2017, there was little doubt as to what beer would be rolling off it first. The Gipps St Pale Ale has become the brewery's flagship, collecting a gold medal along the way, and now appears inside stripey green, black and white cans as well as on taps across the country. Given the beer was also at the centre of the brewery's successful attempt to raise $75,000 for Movember by selling a thousand kegs in a month,… Read more

Stomping Ground Bad Seed Berliner Weisse

One of the first beers put through the brewery at Stomping Ground – months before the venue was ready to open – was a Berliner Weisse. The acidic, low ABV style that originates in Germany has become increasingly popular in Australia in recent years and, with theirs, Stomping Ground is looking to be as faithful to the originals as possible. In the few places where you still find Berliner Weisse being brewed and poured in Germany, you would typically be offered a syrup to add to the base beer.… Read more

Stomping Ground Grandstand Aussie Ale

In the world of contemporary pale ales, you find most falling into one of two distinct camps. There's the typically bolder American inspired ones (like Stomping Ground's Gipps St Pale Ale) and then those of an Australian bent; usually lighter in colour and body and leaning towards more tropical hop characters, as opposed to citrus or pine. The Grandstand is Stomping Grounds entry into the latter category, a beer that pours a slightly cloudy yellow and emits prominent tropical fruit aromas. They come… Read more

Stomping Ground Four Seasons Kolsch

Given part of the ethos driving Stomping Ground is to bring in new people to craft beer – including those who would never have visited a brewery or brewpub before – there's a fair bit of attention focused on the "Easy Drinking" section of their beer menu. And it's there that you find the Four Seasons Kolsch, the first step away from the Laneway Lager before you hit more punchy flavours and aromas. Stomping Ground Upside Down Brown Ale

When you open a new brewery, you can never be too sure which beers are going to find favour with your public. Sure, a pale is always going to be a winner, probably an IPA and, these days, a well made sour for the more discerning drinker. The benefit of having 26 taps to play with is that you can try out many things and see what sticks. Among the early releases to find favour with Stomping Ground's audience was the Upside Down. You struggle to find a brewery in Australia these days without an IPA in its range. And when you've got 26 taps of your own to fill, well, there's no excuse for not offering at least one to satisfy the country's rabid hop fiends. So that's what Stomping Ground does with One-Eyed, a beer that takes its inspiration from the States, just like the venue itself, and is thus awash with fruity hops. Tapped August 10th, 2018
The cans have been flying out of Stomping Ground's Collingwood brewery over the past six months or so and now they've got some wax-sealed company in the shape of Kompromat, a bourbon barrel aged Russian imperial stout. Stomping Ground Bunker Porter

The crew behind Stomping Ground has always seen the brewpub as a continuation or renaissance of its home 'burb's brewing traditions and, with the Bunker Porter – so named due to a legend there's a wartime bunker below their Collingwood home, there's a visual nod to beers of the past too. On the outside, it looks like a beer that could have come from a local brewery decades ago – or, indeed, one from the UK – and what's inside the cans doesn't deviate from tradition either. Every ingredient in beery glass of beer plays a crucial role. Without getting the balance right, you're not going to end up with a delicious beer. Now, while the mercury is still (mostly) high, they've sent their first seasonal out into the world. And it's a beer that's very much of its time: a fruit sour.
