Shakespeare in the Otways at Prickly Moses (VIC)

If you like cultural mash-ups, this could be exactly the kind of thing you’d be after.

The Otway Estate Winery, at which Prickly Moses beers are brewed, has this year been hosting a series of performances under the banner of Shakespeare in the Otways. Sprawled amidst the vines on November 18 you’ll be able to enjoy the last show of the series, a performance of Romeo and Juliet.

The cellar door will be open from 5pm for pre-show drinks but, in what is likely to be unique in the world of theatre, before the show you’ll also be able to take in a brewery tour where you can meet the brewer, learn about how beer is made and from which ingredient before partaking in a guided tasting. The tour will run for about 40 minutes, leaving you plenty of time to wander over the grass and find a spot to watch the play.

The brewery tours costs $10 and needs to be booked in advance (the 4pm session has already sold out, with only the 5pm tour remaining).

For sustenance they’ll have dinner hampers available to buy for $25 per person and filled with treats like croissants, baguettes, tarts, brownies, fresh fruit, crackers, cheeses, pastes, olives, frittatas and a whole lot more (including a vegetarian option).

You can book a ticket to the play and the brewery tour here and if you want to stay the night, they’ve got on-site accommodation which you can book here, which really would make for a rather pleasant evening.

Note: BYO food and alcohol isn't permitted at the Shakespeare performance – offenders will be made to get up on stage…
