It's that time again to get a hands-on reminder of beer's agricultural origins as Van Diemen host their annual hop harvest picking day.
On March 15 the Tassie farm/brewery is looking for volunteers to come and experience all the sights, smells and sticky fingers of what's arguably the most anticipated day of the brewery's calendar.
It's not a particularly strenuous job, but it has to be done and many hands make light work - plus it's nice to be outside, learning something new with likeminded people. They reckon it'll all be wrapped up within 4-5 hours, depending on the size of the crew, at which point a portion of the fresh hops will be headed directly into a 2025 Fresh Hop beer; the rest is destined for the kiln to be dried for use throughout the next 12 months in an array of Van Diemen estate beers.
If you'd like to be part of this paddock-to-pint experience – and indulge in the inimitable opportunity to go deep into hops at their absolute freshest – just register at the link below (it's free, but they need to know numbers) and make sure you bring a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, sunscreen, and something to sit on - and maybe some extra snacks in case you get peckish. Keeping with the community spirit of the occasion, kids are welcome (just please don't bring your pets to this one).
And in appreciation of your toil, they'll put on some beers once the harvest is complete.
