Thunder Road Brewing is after a new Head of Brewing. The Melbourne brewery, which was named Australian International Beer Awards champion in 2014 and 2015, brews a core range of approachable craft ales and lagers and also operates a barrel program and undertakes regular international collaborations.

JOB DESCRIPTION: HEAD OF BREWING

Thunder Road Brewing Co is located in Brunswick, Melbourne, Australia, operating a science focused, urban 35 hectolitre brewery operation and small pub style pilot brewing system.

We are the AIBA Champion Medium Size Australian Brewery of 2014 and 2015.

We produce bulk keg and can beer in Australia as well as packaged bottle beer outside Australia for export.

Our long time Head of Brewing is moving to the USA, so this position is immediately available with appropriate hand over time available.

Role Scope:

This autonomous role involves the management of the overall brewing business, overseeing brewing expansion 24 hour per day, including a move to full automation to deliver growing sales, reduce costs and greater efficiency, brewing tasks and continuous improvements, quality consistency, capital allocations, cost reduction programs and maximising efficiency.

You will also lead the product development with a support team in accordance with marketing directives and finance objectives.     

Specific day to day scope will include:

  • Production: all day to day production requirements, processes, production planning, monitoring inventory levels, ensuring high standards of house keeping.
  • Beer quality: Overall responsibility for Quality KPI and measurability.
  • People and teams: Manage the team's daily and weekly activities, develop professional relationships and team cohesion, a culture of Safety First.
  • Focused improvements and Projects: Use measurable to identify improvements, drive an improvement culture, manage and lead NPD.
  • Cost Centre Management: Create FMO and CAPEX budgets and manage, work with suppliers to reduce costs.
  • Delight the customer: Manage beer quality in trade with sales as required, manage NPD calendar to deliver new beers to delight our customers.

Skill Requirements:

Formal International Brewing qualifications eg IBD and / or science / engineering qualifications with experience in brewing is essential. Experienced in process engineering would be an advantage, including plant automation and project management. Ability to work in a team environment, undertake shift brewing work and manage people well is a requirement also. Minimum three to five years senior brewing experience in a similar size brewery or larger.

You will have a commitment to beer quality and can support the team with ongoing quality conformance and plant hygiene including HACCP / Food safety certification maintenance.
