Crafty Six GBW Special #9: Learn Stuff

Chances are you'll learn something pretty much wherever you go during Good Beer Week, whether chancing upon a new beer, discovering an incredible beer and food pairing, meeting a brewer or uncovering a great new venue. But there are events on the schedule that put education front and central too.

For the hardcore, there is the Australian Craft Brewers Conference (and its retail-orientated spinoff the Art of Selling Craft), while Little Creatures once again is hosting a series of events as it turns its Fitzroy Dining Hall into Good Beer College for the week. Elsewhere, for the consumer or inquisitive home brewer here's our pick of six events that are guaranteed to give the brainbox a good beer workout.

Click on the event titles to view their full listing on the festival website.

Hopology

The Gertrude Hotel – May 20
$48pp

Join the lupulin-lovin' brewers from Bridge Road, Epic (NZ) and Liberty (NZ) for a journey into hops. Brewers' favourite hops, hoppy beers and stories from the whirlpool. Home brewers' Q & A welcome.

Master Brewer Masterclass: An Intimate Afternoon with Rodenbach

Forester's Hall – May 17
$149pp

Good Beer Week is lucky enough to have one of the master brewers from Belgian legends Rodenbach (pictured above) coming to Melbourne. Filip Sneppe is an oak master and fruit master with 15 years at the brewery under his belt. He's also the man behind Rodenbach's awesome Caractere Rouge. Join him, some never-before-seen-in-Australia beers and awesome Flemish food for an insight into brewing these unique beers.*

From Home Brewer to Pro Brewer

Cherry Tree Hotel – May 18
$40pp

This popular, long-running event moves with the GB's former owners to their new home in Cremorne. Join brewers and their teams from Hawkers, Mountain Goat, Bandicoot and Wolf of the Willows as they share their tales of making the step up.

Beer Innovation

The Kelvin Club – May 22
$25pp

This CBD private members club has lined up a panel of industry experts to share their knowledge on how emerging brewers use innovative technology and digital platforms to grow their business. Beer and food included too.

Hops: Drink Awesome, Drink Fresh

Two Row – May 20
$40pp

Hendo from BrewCult launched his exploration of the importance of drinking hoppy beers fresh at last year's Good Beer Week. He's since toured the land with it and is now returning to where it began.

Is Beer The New Wine?

Toff in Town – May 18
$45pp

Toff in Town hosts a Great Debate featuring experts from the worlds of beer and wine. You can pair their pontifications with beer, wine and cheese while deciding who will win out.

* The original listing for this event stated that Rudi Ghequire would be representing Rodenbach. Due to unforeseen circumstances, he is unable to fly to Australia. Rest assured, Filip is a true sour beer guru – one of the Palm and Rodenbach's top guys.
