Meet The Thorny Goat

The milestones keep on coming for Aussie craft beer, the latest being the first international collaboration by a local brewery. As we revealed here a couple of weeks back, Mountain Goat had arranged to get together with Caolan Vaughan, the Aussie who’s now production manager at Thornbridge in the UK, the brewery that has five of the top ten British beers for 2010 on RateBeer. Not bad, eh.

Goat co-founder Dave Bonighton and Caolan exchanged ideas prior to the latter’s arrival in Melbourne last week and on Friday set about creating a Southern Hemisphere version of Thornbridge’s Raven Black IPA. It’s chockfull of Aussie and Kiwi hops (with more being added to the tanks by the hour if reports emanating from the brewery are to be believed) and will come out on the Mountain Goat Rare Breed label sometime soon.

Discussions are underway about a return visit by Dave to Derbyshire later in the year to brew a cask-conditioned version of one of the Goat classics. Hopefully, he won’t fall and sprain his ankle as Caolan did…

As for this one, we were lucky enough to be there on the day the Thorny Goat was born, so hit play and enjoy!
