James Halliday Feature: Community Service

Any day now, the latest edition of James Halliday's Wine Companion Magazine will hit shelves across the country. Inside will be a feature article penned by The Crafty Pint's founder looking at the renaissance of lager in the craft beer world.

So, as is customary when a new feature is on its way, we've taken a peek inside the vault containing past features and brought one back to life for your online viewing pleasure. This time around, it's a fairly recent article – and one that's timely given the story on Big Shed Brewing Concern on here yesterday – that looks at "communal brewing".

This is where a host brewery offers time on the brewhouse and fermenter capacity (either rented or purchased and installed) to other brewing companies looking for a relatively low cost way into the commercial brewing world or for somewhere to brew occasional extra batches.

In the article, we hear from:

  • Heath Shirtcliffe, face of Cavalier Brewing (and ever present at every beer event in the country these days to the extent we think the brewery may have cloned multiple Heaths)
  • Toby Kline, part of the Mismatch Brewing team who were the first to sign up at Big Shed Brewing Concern in Adelaide and are responsible for most of the beer currently produced there
  • Matt King from Grifter Brewing Co, who were invited to brew at Young Henrys, ended up installing their own tank there and are now outgrowing their corner of the ever-expanding Newtown brewery

And pick five top drops that have eventuated from such arrangements.
