Margaret River's Cheeky Monkey has become the latest Aussie micro to install a canning machine, with the technicians from Cask getting the line in place in time for summer 2015/16. Initially at least, they'll be available in WA only – just like the brewery's draught beers and ciders. The first three of brewer Ross Terlick's range to get the tinnie treatment are the Old Reliable pale ale, the Blonde Capuchin summer ale and Crooked Tales dry apple cider.
For those unfamiliar with Cheeky Monkey, the Old Reliable is, first and foremost, an English style pale ale, albeit one in which the use of Centennial hops from the US (alongside Bravo and English East Kent Goldings) add a citrusy touch. It's a pretty forceful affair compared to a lot of contemporary Aussie brewed pales, with strong biscuity, nutty malts and a full, earthy bitter finish.
The Blonde Capuchin was added to the lineup last summer and is a really enjoyable take on what's known as a summer ale: pale gold in colour, a smooth body and flavours and aromas of melon and soft, sweet malt with a mild but pleasant bitterness. As for the Crooked Tales, well, we don't really drink much cider at Crafty Towers so can't offer much more than that it's fruity and dry!
