In a modern beer world where you're free to add anything from fruit to squid ink to your beer, the Reinheitsgebot – the oft-cited German law which decrees the purity of beer by using only water, barley and hops – isn't exactly gospel. Still, it's a nice slice of history and it turns 500 this year so why not celebrate with some beers from the land of its birth?
On Saturday April 23 The Local Taphouse in Darlinghurst will be featuring a range of beers from German brewers such as Erdinger, Bitburger, Kostritzer and Fruh. The kitchen will be serving up some classic German dishes as accompaniments.
Things kick off around midday with live music in the downstairs bar in the evening.
