Competition: BEERtographers Wanted!

The organisers of the Great Australian Beer Festival have teamed up with Little Creatures for a competition that will seeing the winner take home $1500 and earn a permanent place at the soon-to-open Little Creatures in Geelong. BEERtography invites you to grab your camera (or phone) and start taking creative photos that “capture the rising craft beer lifestyle culture”.

Submissions will be judged in January by a panel headed up by Melbourne photographer Luzio Grossi (above left with festival organisers Michael Ward and Kieran Blood), who has been published in the likes of Vogue, The Face UK and Rolling Stone USA. The winning snapper not only wins the cash but will see their photograph hung permanently at Little Creatures.

To be in with a chance of winning, head to the GABF website to download an entry form, then get snapping and send your images by email to beertography@beerambassadors.com.au. Up to two photos may be entered per person. Photos must be a minimum of 300dpi and a maximum of 2MB.

On top of the awesome top prize, there are also second and third place prizes of $500 and $200, with all three winners being displayed at the Great Australian Beer Festival, which returns to Geelong Racecourse on February 1. All submissions must be received by 5pm on January 10, 2014.

For those seeking a little inspiration or an insight into what the judges might be looking for, we posed a couple of questions to Michael and Kieran, aka the Beer Ambassadors.

Why are you doing this?

In a nutshell, craft beer enthusiasts are witty and experimental. They like variety, seasonal offerings and appreciate the time and efforts that go into producing craft beer.

Craft beer is an art form and we see it fitting really well with both the visual and performing arts. Seeing art is incredibly subjective and engaging on multiple levels, we think it’s a great opportunity to add a fringe-fest arts element to enhance our patron’s overall experience. GABF 2014 will ultimately stimulate more than just taste buds.

We admire how Little Creatures have teamed up with artists and galleries to promote art and beer. We welcome them aboard as sponsors of this inaugural photography competition and look forward to working with them to develop BEERtography into a much sought after and prestigious contest among photographers around Australia.

What do you hope to see from the photographs?

I read somewhere that ‘The Craft Beer Revolution may not be televised, but it will certainly be photographed…’ This annual competition aims to showcase the artistic beauty of crafted beer in all its elements.

There are many talented beer-themed photographers around the world who use their bottles, cans and other props to create some beautiful images. This is our attempt to encourage Australian photographers to capture the very essence of what quality craft beer means to them. Taking photos of craft beer is not unique, taking photos of craft beer and entering them into a competition to be in the chance to win $1500 and have your winning image permanently displayed at Little Creature’s new Geelong brewery is.

We’ve assembled a fantastic panel to decide which piece of art best represents craft beer and ultimately worthy to hang in Little Creatures’ new brewery in Geelong.

They will be looking for images inspired by the aesthetics of craft beer and how it intersects with either food, culture, or society.

Thanks to the magic of smartphones and smartphone Apps like Instagram, you don’t need a fancy camera to take an interesting photo. So what are you waiting for? Pour yourself a craft beer, break out your camera, and start making some photographic memories while you enjoy your beverage! Cheers!

What can people expect from the second GABF?

The festival itself will be a day that connoisseurs, converts and the uninitiated alike can enjoy spending a summer’s day meandering through Australia’s biggest alfresco craft beer garden. Indulge in a delightful journey of sipping, sampling and tasting over 150 craft beers from brewers representing every state in the country.

Attend workshops and demonstrations on how to combine beer with food with plenty of tastings on offer. The return of a bigger and broader homebrew competition with seminars taking people through the process. Even if beer specifically isn’t your thing, there is still plenty for you – discover a world of organic local gourmet foods, great music, vibrant cabaret, indie stalls and groovy art.
