The Craftiness Expandeth

Looks like it's time for another roundup of the latest new listings to be added to our directories of breweries, bars and bottleshops. Since our last roundup we've added a dozen more from Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales and have many more waiting in the wings.

So, if you missed them when we announced their arrival on the site first time around, fear not as they're all linked below. And if you're wondering why we don't have more on the site (yet) and why it takes us time to add more, it's pretty simple.

First up, since day one we've operated a policy of visiting every single venue before compiling a listing. This allows us to meet the owners, get their story and a feel for the place, ensure it meets the standards required to be on the site (we have rejected requests to be listed), take photos and so on. Our listings are then written independently (and later approved by the business concerned) to ensure there's a consistent "Crafty Pint" voice and that we're not simply relying on businesses supplying their own copy and photos, thus taking them at their word that it's accurate. This takes a lot longer – many other directories require businesses to compile the listings themselves and just pocket the money – but we believe that, usually, the hard way is the best way.

As you can imagine, with a seriously small team and a bloody big country to deal with, getting to every brewery and venue that wants a listing takes time, as does the compilation process.

Another reason that not every craft beer supporting business is listed is that we charge a fee for listings. It helps keep the site going: they support us supporting them and the industry they are in. We keep the fees at what we consider to be a seriously affordable level, especially when compared with some similar local listing directories and given the time, love and effort that goes into each listing. That doesn't mean every business can afford – or wants to pay – to be on the site and that's something we well understand in an industry populated with predominantly small businesses. We don't chase listings but wait to be approached and, once we've laid out what's involved, if a business declines to take things further we'll never hassle them.

We should point out that there is, however, no "pay for play". We write about anything we think is newsworthy, whether the business concerned supports what we do or not. The only things limiting what we write about are time and resources, both of which we're constantly working to expand.

For those who've been following The Crafty Pint for years, apologies for going over old ground. But, with site traffic growing by well over 50 percent year on year – and faster still since the new look site went live – we have more readers getting in touch to ask why their favourite brewery or beer venue isn't on the site so figured we explain how we operate.

Anyway, those listings...

Thanks to Nick O (Crafty Pint NSW) and Darren Magin (250 Beers) for help compiling them. And here's to the next round!
