Like its namesake in the world of music, Mixtape's Marrickville brewery bar offers plenty of variety when it comes to what's pouring through its beer taps. There’s the crowd pleasers, the curious B-sides and the coveted rarities that every good compilation needs to really rock your socks off.
Owner and head brewer Jason Newtown doesn’t produce a stock-standard core range, however, instead preferring to brew a revolving door of different recipes that cover off popular styles on the one hand while experimenting with some pretty unique (and ancient) ones on the other. It’s a win-win situation: Jason gets to brew different, dynamic beers and you get to drink them, making Mixtape the perfect place for repeat visitors craving something new to try (plus there’s nine rotating guest taps further enhancing choice).
Jason and wife/co-owner Gabi love their sours, so expect to see a lazy susan of fruit and hop-flavoured offerings on rotation. If you’re lucky, you might just catch his all-time favourite beer to brew – a zesty, margarita-like lime gose – unless he’s drunk it all himself already. Don’t miss that one, and keep an eye out for Euro farmhouse styles like saisons and grisettes, which have made cameos too.
