Last year the team at Carwyn Cellars put together a sour event they hoped would be quite popular. Midnight Sour, as they called it, saw them tap a different sour beer every hour for 10 consecutive hours throughout the day, ending with an extra special beer being tapped at midnight. And popular it was – one of their biggest nights of the year, in fact.
So they're doing it again on December 10.
Ever since the success of the last event, they've been squirrelling rare and exciting kegs away in readiness. Midnight Sour II will see them tap a dozen sour beers from producers the world over. The first is at 1pm which sets off the following chain of events...
- 1pm: Boatrocker Miss Pinky Raspberry Berliner Weisse
- 2pm: 3 Ravens Samurai Catfish Gyoza inspired Gose
- 3pm: Hargreaves Hill Barrique Fermente Gueuze Lambic Style
- 4pm: Anderson Valley The Kimmie, The Yink & The Holy Gose Ale
- 5pm: Birrificio del Ducato Kiss Me Lipsia Gose
- 6pm: Brouwerji Alvinne Phi Blonde Sour
- 7pm: Siren Craft Brew Calypso Mandarina Berliner Weisse with Mandarina hops
- 8pm: Rodenbach Caractere Rouge (Flemish sour w cherries, raspberries & cranberries)
- 9pm: Alvinne Cuvee Freddy Flemish Style Ale aged in Burgundy Barrels
- 10pm: Gueuzerie Tilqin Gueuze
- 11pm: Rodenbach Vintage
- Midnight: Boatrocker De Middernacht Zure
The kegs of Rodenbach Vintage & Caractere Rouge are apparently the first to ever come in to Australia, so that, as they say, will be worth the admission price alone (incidentally, there is no admission price – entry is free).
However, the climax of the night will be the midnight tapping of Boatrocker's De Middernacht Zure. This is the result of two and a half years of maturation in a Chardonnay barrel which the Carwyn team picked out during a brewery visit. They have a single 30 litre keg and this will be your only chance to try it – the rest is at the brewery waiting to be blended in a forthcoming release.
