AMSAT are SA-based business that researches, develops, and produces oak alternatives for winemakers and they're working on a range of malts too.

With their master roaster and head of production about to retire, they're looking to hire a production supervisor.

Job Description: Production Supervisor

There aren’t too many opportunities that will have you working across the beer, wine and whisky industries each and every day.

AMSAT is a privately-owned company that researches, develops, and produces oak alternatives for the wine industry, and is now developing a line of character malts for breweries and distilleries. We have been in operation for close to 30 years and supply a number of large companies with our high-quality products.

While the business has been consistently successful over this period, it’s been in the past 12 months that we’ve seen significant growth. With further growth and diversification plans already in place through our character malts, it will be over the coming years that we will see even more growth. With this growth comes a lot of opportunities, as well as a lot of fun!

Our master roaster and head of production, after more than 25 years with the company, is about to retire. This creates a rare and exciting opportunity to join the small and passionate team at AMSAT as the Production Supervisor, with a particular focus on roasting oak and malt, as well as overall malt production.

The Role – Production Supervisor

This is an important role in our business and plays an integral part in the manufacture of our products in a safe and sustainable way. The roasting process for both oak and malt is critical to the quality of our end product, and plays a fundamental role to our customer satisfaction and our success. It is a unique skill, and a mix of science and art.

Further to overseeing the roasting of oak and malt, the role will also oversee the malting process and production of green and kilned malt. Just like roasting, malting is a mix of art and science.

While the production of oak and malt is the key focus of this role, it is not the limit of the role. Being a small team we’re all accustomed to (and enjoy) pitching in anywhere and everywhere we’re needed. As a result, no two days are the same. For this role specifically, machinery maintenance will be involved, and where appropriate and when there is the opportunity, equipment design and production may be a possibility.

Your activities will include:

  • Operation of our roasters to meet quality and quantity targets;
  • Overseeing the malting process and production
  • Systems troubleshooting;
  • Rotating through all aspects of the production process and hygiene activities;
  • Contributing as a team member within a high performing team;
  • Ensuring plant HACCP, Quality and Continuous Improvement systems are followed and met;
  • Taking ownership and being actively involved and committed to ensuring a safe workplace.
  • Equipment maintenance, repair, and development.

The Ideal Candidate

Along with being a great cultural fit, to be considered for this role, you will ideally bring with you the below attributes:

  • Knowledge within, or passion for the brewing, distilling or wine industry (a brewer would be highly regarded)
  • A process minded approach to maximise efficiencies within the roasting process;
  • Excellent communication skills for close collaboration with staff and external service providers;
  • Diligence, attention to detail and commitment to set and maintain the highest possible hygiene standards;
  • Team spirited (flexibility to assist in other teams as required);
  • Problem solving skills;
  • Strong computer literacy;
  • A trade background will be highly regarded.

We offer an attractive salary and benefits package and we strive to be a great employer, focusing on flexibility, inclusion, collaboration, and health and wellbeing. We live our values, putting people at the heart of what we do.

If this sounds like an environment you would thrive in, then we would love to hear from you. Please send your application through to simon@amsat.net.au.
