Media Release: Cascade flows at 200th birthday celebrations

Politicians, brewery workers, and business representatives today gathered at the Cascade Brewery to toast two centuries of endurance, innovation and the spirit of Tasmania.

The Pale Ale flowed as Cascade celebrated with live music, the cutting of a birthday cake and a toast to 200 years of Standing Proud.

The 150 guests also heard from Tasmanian Premier the Hon Jeremy Rockliff MP and Deputy Lord Mayor of Hobart Councillor Dr Zelinda Sherlock about Cascade’s journey from humble sawmill to Tasmanian icon and Australia’s oldest brewery.

Premier Rockliff said it was a point of great pride in Tasmania that Cascade Brewing Co. was the oldest operating brewery in Australia.

“What many people may not know is that Cascade is also the oldest operating manufacturing business in Australia,” Premier Rockliff said.

“Tasmanians are so proud of what we grow and make in Tasmania, and Cascade is one of our many iconic producers.

“The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of Cascade, investing $1 million into the significant upgrades undertaken in 2019.

“Cascade’s presence in southern Tasmania has been significant over the past 200 years, and it continues to be, with about 80 Tasmanians employed and offering a unique place for the community and visitors alike.”

Cascade is a unique example of Australia’s industrial heritage but remains a vital part of the local community. It employs people across the brewery, bar and sales teams, supporting hundreds of local businesses and is a must-visit tourist destination.

Asahi Beverages Group CEO Amanda Sellers, who also spoke at the event, said:

“This remarkable anniversary would not be possible without all those who have made Cascade one of Australia’s most enduring brands and today’s event was a unique opportunity to celebrate them. From our customers and drinkers to our partners and suppliers, employees and the broader Hobart community – we thank you for your loyal support.

“From its picturesque location in the foothills of kunanyi / Mount Wellington to its role supplying thirsty beer lovers for generations, Cascade holds a special place in the hearts of Tasmanians and many mainlanders as well.

“The Cascade Brewery is an important part of our operations in Australia, producing not just Cascade, but craft beer, ciders and other CUB beers. With continued investment and innovation - and a commitment to sustainability and community engagement - Cascade Brewery is set to continue brewing Tasmania’s best beers for another 200 years and beyond.”

Cascade is celebrating 200 years by shouting a free beer for the first 200 people at different pubs on the first Friday of the month for the rest of 2024. We’ve also released limited commemorative Cascade Draught 375mL cans emblazoned with the words “Standing proud for 200 years” that are on-sale until the end of the year.

And later this year we’ll launch a unique new Cascade beer for Tasmania and the mainland, with more announcements to follow soon.
