Arcade machines, claymation videos and an all-round sense of Tron; it's not too often birthday parties look like this in 2023. Come to think of it: the 80s are incredibly cool right now so what do I know? Most birthdays probably look like this. That's certainly the case for AVNGE Brewing's second annivesary, with the Melbourne outfit celebrating with the passionfruit sour, Level Up x2.
As a reminder that even marking your own birthday can result in a whole lot of work, making the beer saw brewery founder James Isacsson load a 1,200-litre kettle with 120 kilos of passionfruit puree for a brew day that was as tough as it was sticky. It's not just about the fruit though, with Level Up making use of Zappa hops to set the tropical tone while bringing some bitterness to balance what is otherwise a game of vibrant passionfruit, sweet nectar and lasting tartness.
