Biere De Mer. Or, if you only speak Strayan, that would be: "sea beer".
Madocke are always interested in new sustainable methods they can incorporate into their brewing practices. So when they saw the opportunity to use sea water that had been desalinated through a process that removes both the salt and any impurities, they jumped on it – not just to brew a fun beer, but also to promote water renewability and highlight the potential for sustainable water sourcing in the brewing process. After all, we’ve all seen enough dystopian films to know we need to look after our water.
“We are honestly shocked by the overwhelming support and demand, as we thought many people would potentially be turned off by the idea of a beer made from desalinated water,” says Annelies Nijskens, co-owner of Madocke. “But we are pleased to say that it has been a smash hit!"
Like Big Blue* itself, this pale ale is teeming with life – it gives off thick florals on the nose with a tiny hint of weediness, it’s swimming with candied tropicals, and I even picked up some fresh peach and pink Starburst in there.
And as a bonus: it doesn’t taste like you’ve just been dunked by a wave.
